Sometimes, all you want from a novel is comfort and a heartwarming story and that’s exactly what you get in Backman’s novel A Man Called Ove, centered on a character who is a grumpy old man named Ove. He is a not so perfect character; like any normal human being, he has flaws. Ove doesn’t like many things such as people, modern technology, disorder, and noise. He is very much a character who adheres to his own views and principles throughout the novel. But can we judge him on this basis?
“A time like that comes for every man, when he chooses what sort of man he wants to be. And if you don’t know the story, you don’t know the man.”
Nowadays, people often judge others, particularly those from older generations based on their behavior without connecting with them personally or understanding their stories and experiences. This novel connects the readers to the story of a very lonely character who leads a simple life rooted in his own beliefs about what he likes and dislikes. However, if you enter in his life with love, it may change him or his circumstances. Additionally, his love for his wife is very heartwarming and most beautiful bond you’ll ever read.
Ove is truly one of those characters whom you can relate to in an absurdist way.
“He’d discovered that he liked houses. Maybe mostly because they were understandable. They could be calculated and drawn on paper. They did not leak if they were made watertight; they did not collapse if they were properly supported. Houses were fair, they gave you what you deserved. Which, unfortunately, was more than one could say about people”
Well, if you are a reader looking for a twist-filled plot, then this novel is definitely not for you. However, if you want to develop your perception, critical thinking skills, understand the generational gap, explore loneliness, and appreciate the power of transformation in life, then A Man Called Ove is the perfect choice. With every page, you’ll experience the beauty of love, simplicity, and the transformative power of genuine connection.j
“You know, Ove, sometimes one almost suspects you have a heart. . . .”
Personally, I cherish this novel because it explores various themes, such as how the power of connection can help you overcome grief, challenges the age-related stereotypes, and adaption to the changes and absurdities of life. Although Ove initially feels he has no purpose to live, he begins to change his mind as he genuinely connects with the people around him, like Parvaneh and her daughters, as well as forming a bond with Patrick and others. These connections lead him to reconsider his decision to die and ultimately find a reason to live. Additionally, there are certain scenes that provide elements of humor, creating laughter for the reader.
