Whilst there are few differences in what men and women want for their skin, there are differences in what they want to use and how their skin responds. Men’s skin has very specific needs in order to keep it bright, clear, and youthful, so to explore further, Skin Inspection, specialist dermatologists in London, have put together some expert skincare tips designed with men in mind.
1. Read the labels
The best way to be successful with your skincare is to know what you are using. You should check the descriptions and ingredients to make sure it is suitable for your skin type. Sensitive skin needs gentle, fragrance-free products to avoid irritation whilst acne-prone skin will benefit from products which are oil free or non-comedogenic.
2. Avoid soap
It can be tempting to think that you are doing right by your skin through washing it, but this is not always the case. Soap can be made of ingredients which are very harsh on the skin, causing it to dry out. Instead, look at using a specially designed cleanser, or if you suffer from skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis you may find it better to wash with an emollient.
3. Keep cool
When you do wash your skin, try not to put the tap on its hottest setting. This can also be very drying for the skin, so try to use water, which is a lukewarm temperature, as this is much more beneficial for your skin.
4. Have a skincare routine
If you want skin to look young and fresh, you will need a skincare routine. If you want to keep it simple, make sure that you cleanse and moisturise, but you should also try to exfoliate once or twice a week and it is advisable to look for a serum that suits your skin.
5. Always wear sunscreen
We can all fall into the trap of only wearing sunscreen when we are around the pool, but this is never a good plan. We are actually vulnerable to sun damage all year round, even when it seems as though there is no sun to be seen.
When the UV rays of the sun hit your skin, they can cause all types of damage, including skin cancer, but they can also bring about premature ageing and pigmentation issues. You should therefore make sunscreen part of your everyday skincare routine. Make sure it has an SPF of at least 30 and is applied on top of any other skincare to create a proper barrier.
6. Take care shaving
Most men will know that shaving can lead to a lot of irritation, so it is important that you do it the right way. Make sure that you use a clean, sharp razor that is replaced regularly and prepare the skin with warm water and pre-shave oil.
Keep your razor strokes slow and steady in the direction of the grain of hair growth and then close the pore with a splash of cold water at the end. You should also think about finishing with a soothing moisturiser to help your skin recover and avoid any reactions.
7. See a professional
It can be tempting to think of beauty salons as the domain of women, but more and more of them are now offering skin treatments specifically for men. Your therapist will understand the needs of your skin and can put together a treatment tailored around you. They can offer your skin some intensive care and can also help you to understand the best products to use at home.
Skincare can be a science, so it is good to put some thought into it and seek the help of a professional from time to time.
