Backstory of this song:

I have been playing guitar for more than 20 years now. When I first started out, I learned some basic chords to accompany myself to some easy songs already written. But almost from the start, I would write my own songs, because you can base them on the chords you are capable to play and thus practice better.

After a while, though, you get bored with just a few basic chords. You realize that there are some transitions between those chords that musicians all over the world have used, that just feel natural. You start to integrate those transitions into your chord playing. And the more you do it, the more you can suddenly "guess" how a song might be played just by seeing a few basic chords.

But once you get used to it, you start to hear those basic, natural chord progressions everywhere. And soon enough, songs you have adored a few years back suddenly turn very boring. Another variation of the same stuff again? Yawn!

So I've come to a point where for every new song I compose, I want to incorporate something I've never used in another song I've ever written. Make each song unique. Which of course becomes increasingly difficult the more songs you have written, and I have written quite a lot in those 20 years.

So perhaps surprisingly, this song started out purely as a quest to discover new sounds, new possibilities in my guitar.

But once you discover those new sounds, they change your thinking, they change your perspective, they change you. And suddenly, for some reason I wanted to write a song that was meant to be a blessing. It just felt right to try this, and in just a few hours I had the basics in place.

It already sounded really great when I sang it by myself. But then my girlfriend heard me sing and joined me, and the whole thing really exploded into a whole different thing.

To this day, I consider it one of the best songs I've ever written, and pretty much wherever we play it, people are deeply moved. It feels as if it comes from quite another source than just myself, really.

So I hope you enjoyed it :)
