"The Wind" Playlist Prompt

Send me a few songs!

After the fun of my first playlist prompt, I've been wanting to do another. And since I've had a particular song stuck in my head for days now, I figured I'd just lean into it.

"The Wind" by Cat Stevens is a song I listen to on repeat. I'm not a huge fan of Stevens' other songs, which is kind of strange, since this one seems so...insignificant. What I mean is that it probably isn't very representative of his music. It's very short, with only a couple verses and no bridge. It doesn't seem to have the same kind of socio-political message as his other stuff either. Yet, I'm enamored with it. The overall metaphor, the sound of the guitar, the short length; it's a little bit of magic, I think.

Maybe two years ago, I created a Spotify playlist called "The Wind" and started adding songs to it that had "wind" in the title. Well, it's not a very long playlist, if you can believe it, and a few of the songs are maybe iffy on whether they quite fit the vibe I have in my head... But I like it overall, and while I haven't arranged the songs in any particular order, I think it's an interesting exercise to see different artists' take on the word. A lot of the songs are on the shorter side and tend to be more contemplative in their lyrics. The sounds vary quite a bit; I like to think that they, on average, attempt to emulate different types of winds, from gusts to breezes, to simple, unfelt stirrings of the air.

I'll link it at the bottom of this article in case anyone is interested in listening!

What I have in mind for this prompt, however, is not to find a song that contains the word "wind" but rather to find a song that evokes some the feeling or memory of the wind and outside air. This could be a specific season or an occasion where the wind (or its absence) held significance for you; anything along those lines.

I don't care what the song is called. I do want it to evoke "the wind."

If I get enough submissions to make an hour-long playlist, so around 15 songs, give or take a couple, I will post a follow-up article with a YouTube and Spotify link and a review along with it. Like last time!

Not only do I love this method for finding new music, I think it's a beautiful way to get to know other creators. To discover your musical tastes is a kind of intimacy that people, on the whole, seem to relish in. I hope you choose to join in on this one!

The "deadline" is simply the submissions petering out.

Now, I won't put a limit on your submissions. Last time, I didn't even consider song limits and ended up asking a few of you to pick your top two songs so the playlist didn't become unbalanced. For this one, I'm not sure I care all that much about the balance. Just be mindful of the prompt, and choose accordingly. Perhaps I could advise everyone to read the comments and "match the speed of traffic," so to speak. But no, there will not be an official limit. :D

Happy song-hunting! I'm very excited to listen to your selections! I think this playlist will be very unique and beautiful to listen to.

Cheers!

Update: To clarify, the prompt is to find a few songs that you feel evoke the wind. Send me the links to those songs. If you feel moved to write a separate article, please do. But I am not judging those pieces at all. The fun is to build a playlist together! I also don't have time for judging at the moment. I just want to listen. So, if you make your own playlist, let me know which songs you’d like to be in the community playlist. Otherwise, I’ll be focusing on the songs I receive in link form. 😊

A/N: Here's my chaotically compiled playlist, "The Wind."

Love this idea...you and your playlist things - your existing one original one is great. Here are some for the new one: Latyrx - Storm Warning - https://open.spotify.com/track/65KpgmQUvzIobafCErmfcx?si=4b5d168209dc4a4a A song about storms with some stunning and dextrous rap performance and writing skills. Feels like a storm. The Prodigy - Weather Experience - https://open.spotify.com/track/6S6tEO1I5VWw5aEHSDTf0e?si=26440775b0ed4ae8 Quite apt. Leftfield - Storm 3000 - https://open.spotify.com/track/0bBWHgg8ZqxGx0btglhn1X?si=08356c8fe3bf42c9 This definitely sounds like a storm. Leftfield - Melt - https://open.spotify.com/track/5XoUmYzWa8YTaxxV9DWEU3?si=212fa9c9a01c4a36 I often associate this with summer, because it's so damn calming, but it could equally represent the windiness of a storm, lots of the sounds remind me of storms. Gorillaz - Slow Country - https://open.spotify.com/track/2VX5J8lHfBjlcY4xU3TqtA?si=b0f8ea6df30a4f6f Wind noises and reminds me of the loneliness and serenity of storms. Funnily enough the wind noises and beat (I believe) are sampled from the following song... The Specials - Ghost Town - https://open.spotify.com/track/2Mya0Xqtg9arBGHtKUNxOV?si=9d5b824d2abc439c Nine Inch Nails - A Warm Place - https://open.spotify.com/track/1HsjoAytWxKDxjAV6dLGxW?si=cb09345d4de74018 Despite it's name, sounds very stormy to me :)

I guess the most obvious one would be Bob Dylan « Blowin’ in the Wind » but how about John Cage’s « In a Landscape ». Take a deep breath and relax first, then imagine a dandelion seed in a slight breeze.

Ok, I found two pieces in my liked songs with 'wind' in their title. "Catch the Wind" by Roza FA and "Breath of Wind" by Roxana, both instrumental. Do they evoke 'the wind'? To me, to some extent. The one I thought about in the first place as wind-evoking was this one though: "Murmuration" by GoGo Penguin. Well, and all their other music pieces are rather windy, a kind of playful breeze windy.

Gosh, could go all over the place with this. Might be less reflective of my taste and more of my memory.

  • I will do one for you to read this week

The Partisan by Leonard Cohen has a great line in it about the wind. But I don’t think it really evokes the wind 🤔 I’ll have to give this one some thought!
