The MookMann

Trap jazz artist

By William Johnson Published 6 years ago 4 min read

The MookMann is a trap jazz artist and trap jazz is a combination of jazz soul and urban rap. When you put the sounds together you get a unique taste of pure originality. I like to reference it as ignorance meets class. I love to tell stories based off people lives and give solutions to their troubles as well as make ya shake ya groove.

“Before music I wasn’t so chill, part of my life consisted of fighting everyone that made me feel uncomfortable. People used to tease me based off the clothes I would wear and I never did have a good comeback so fighting was all I knew. Then it eventually caught up to me most of my time would be sitting at home because of my behavior my parents didn’t play that so every chance they got they would discipline me to the fullest. They always wanted best for me so they decided since I was about that bad behavior I would then be apart of this program that would discipline the rudeness or in other words kids who need special attention. How embarrassing for me. And the program would make me feel very less of myself, it was predominantly an all white school and the kids would harass me like crazy. I’ve been called every racist word you could think of and yes I would still defend myself pretty well. But that didn’t prove to my parents that I was ready for the normal life again so as the days goes on I’m still depressed and thinking what else is there to live for. I met this black counselor and she was the only black counselor at the time. And she would pretty much be my guide on how to condone myself. She helped my get through the program and once I got back to the normal school. My parents did a sit down conference with my principal and we was planning out what’s next for me. My dad wanted me to do football so I tried it out, couldn’t memorize plays so the coach pretty much didn’t want me on the team. So one day I’m chilling and I hear a beat upstairs and I ask my brother what’s that and he told me it’s Reggie Bush highlights. I was feeling the beat and when I saw his speed I was so motivated to run fast I started running with a football in my hand back forth down the street. Asking people to race me. I would do this all night and day and eventually gained courage to try out for track and field. When I made the team it felt good. Long story short my freshman year the coaches didn’t believe I would be fast. It was only one coach that had faith in me Coach Joe he trained lots of great talented athletes that are now prospering such as Damiere Byrd who got drafted by the panthers. But anyway he coached me my whole high school seasons and let’s just say my name will always be on the hall of fame of high school athletes. Once I got to college track died for me I really wasn’t feeling it anymore. But giving up wasn’t the answer for me. One day from work I came home and my girl was playing a beat from Masego and she said you should rap on this. It was funny because I’m not a rapper so I was lost. She said try it try it haha and so I went to my in room studio for about 4 hours came out and showed her my rough draft and from then on she was amazed and I would then show people at my job what they think of it and all of the answers were positive so from that point forward I always made music and it all started from a simple beat”.

Here’s more info who The MookMann is as a person:

What is your full name and where are you from?

“Jamaad Muse, I’m from Camden New Jersey”.

What makes you different as a person/artist?

“What makes me different from other people, is I love to be weird instead of going out with the fellas and having fun. I rather listen to the ocean either at the beach or on YouTube. I love Scooby Doo Fruit Snacks, and more than anyone I know. My favorite all time masterpiece would be Art of Noise - Moments in Love. As an artist, lots of people hear my music and say its definitely different from your average. They don’t understand trap jazz until someone they know starts to appreciate it and then they jump on the wagon”.

Where do you see yourself in 5 Years?

“Where I see myself in five years, is sitting in my three bedroom house, making music, and also changing lives for others who have a dream in making their fantasies a reality. Being there for those who need it the most. I’m also thinking about starting my own call center seeing that there will always be a need for work and my biggest contribution would be to help those physically get to their dreams the right way”.
