The Evolution of Indian Songs Lyrics: From Classic Bollywood to Modern Hits

A Journey Through Music, and Changing Trends in Hindi and Punjabi Lyrics

By Lyrics EggPublished 11 months ago 3 min read

Music has always been a reflection of society, emotions, and changing times. Hindi film songs, in particular, have completely transformed over the last century. From the soul-stirring poetry to the catchy, contemporary beats, the lyrics of Bollywood and Punjabi songs have mutated to be resonating to the every generation. It would be eye-opening to take a trip through the times and see how song lyrics in Hindi and Punjabi have gone through changes.

The Golden Era: Poetry and Deep Meanings (1950s-1970s)

The first years of Bollywood have been a time of lyrical depth, poetic storytelling, and meaningful expressions. Poetic storytellers like Sahir Ludhianvi, Shailendra, Majrooh Sultanpuri, and Anand Bakshi put into music the feelings that many people had had for a long time. The emotions that this period expressed were the same as in other such songs as Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein and Tere Mere Sapne Ab Ek Rang Hain, full of emotions, philosophy, and timeless charm.

Punjabi music also had a profound cultural impact at this time, with folk-based lyrics and Sufi poetry having a strong impact on its identity. The Punjabi folk musicians of the ilk of Surinder Kaur and Noor Jehan sang about the eternal love and longing for love by the divine element as well as the parting and devotion topics.

The Melodic Era: Romance and Experimentation (1980s-1990s)

With commercial cinema taking over, Bollywood music started to include more romance and comedy themes. Songwriters like Sameer, Javed Akhtar, and Gulzar came up with some love songs that were amongst the best ever such as Pehla Nasha and Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam. Although feelings were still the focus, lyrics had steadily become more relatable and contemporary.

With time, Bollywood undertook experiments inspired by Indo-Western fusion, and brand-new songs emerged, some traditional Indian melodies, and pop plus disco music blends. This led to a moment when every movie also had its love song. This phase of the Punjabi music industry noticed the rise of pop Punjabi music that incorporated futuristic beats as well as traditional music. For example, Gurdas Maan and Daler Mehndi were in the vanguard of high energy electronic Punjabi lyrics, which then moved into landscaping on more humanistic subjects. Songs such as Bolo Ta Ra Ra and Dil Da Mamla Hai met with an inspired audience, caused by the massive explosion of music in Punjabi.

The Trend-Driven Era: Catchy and Commercial (2000s-Present)

From 2000 onwards Bollywood and Punjabi song lyrics went through a significant change. Western music’s influence led to the writing of the lyrics being concise, vibrant, and often even minimalist. The focus was on music production and beats, and lyrics would often be made to match the vibe rather than convey deep stories.

Songs like Sheila Ki Jawani, Lungi Dance, and Badtameez Dil signifies this shift as their lyrics are more fun, lighthearted and intended for mass appeal. Meanwhile, Punjabi music has kept on growing with artists like Yo Yo Honey Singh, Badshah, and Diljit Dosanjh making the industry with party anthems and urban Punjabi vibes popular.

However, Punjabi music has experienced a sudden surge in prominence unlike before, after artists like Yo Yo Honey Singh, Badshah, and Diljit Dosanjh came to the limelight in the pop music scene with these party anthems and lively Punjabi rhythms. The main subjects covered in Punjabi music have arisen to become love, money, and nightlife, which are geared to the young population’s persuasion. The other trend, independent music, is also becoming popular in this modern era. Independent artists like Prateek Kuhad, Anuv Jain, and Divine are the latest buzz in the music industry. Through their lyrics they are able to involve their audience personal stories, un-achieved love, and self-discovery.

The Digital Age and the Role of Lyrics Platforms

The spread of digital platforms has seen music consumption undergoing a dramatic change from the time before. Music has been made readily available due to streaming services, YouTube, and social media. Consequently, lyrics websites have become a necessity for music lovers who desire to either sing along, understand the meaning of songs, or simply enjoy the poetry of the music.
