Have You Ever Had a Dream Come True?

A Plea from the Heart

I am making a plea to anyone who has ever had a dream so strong, so potent, so vibrant—something you yearned for with passion, something that felt within reach yet always remained just beyond your grasp. My dream has always been to create a song that truly resonates with people—a song that makes a difference.

I’ve had my brushes with success in music, most notably in 1989 and 1992. During that time, I was making real progress, but every time it seemed like things were happening, I somehow managed to mess it up.

Now, here I am, 35 years later, trying again. Once more, I’m making headway. A few months ago, I discovered the world of digital music creation—using AI, digital equalizers, and various digital workstations and studios.

I immediately got to work with my newfound tools and released my debut single, “Blackbird Fly.” Many of you on the Vocal Media platform are already familiar with the song—it has been streamed more than 7,000 times, making it my most popular track.

But today, I want to talk about “Superstar (The Legend Lives On).” This song is starting to gain traction, with approximately 2,500 streams so far. I can feel its potential—the possibility that this might be the song that makes a difference in people’s lives.

Released on January 6, 2025, as part of my debut album, Isabel, at first seemed like the album might not produce a stand out track, apart from “Blackbird Fly” and “Little Blackbird,” which had previously been released as singles. But two weeks after the album dropped, “Superstar” began gaining hundreds of streams—and it continues to grow.

The Story Behind the Song

I wrote the lyrics to “Superstar (The Legend Lives On)” back in 1988. Originally, it had a dark, eerie vibe—something reminiscent of Strange Days by The Doors. My guitarist friend, Jose DeRosas, helped shape the lyrics and melody.

In its current incarnation, I experimented with multi-layered vocals over a progressive pop palette. I aimed for something that blended the harmonies of The Beach Boys with the early sound of Ambrosia—retro, yet experimentally modern.

But what inspired the lyrics? As mentioned, the song was initially a tribute to Jim Morrison. I was a huge Doors fan in the 1980s, and Morrison’s voice influenced my own singing. However, there’s more to the song than that.

A Deeper Meaning

Let me share something I don’t often speak about publicly. I suppose it’s time.

As a child, I was battered and abused. I won’t name names—but I will say that it was not my precious mother. She always fought for me and nurtured me. But yes, there were times when I was beaten with a two-by-four piece of lumber. The pain was so intense that it felt like my back was breaking. I cried a lot as a kid.

When I wasn’t being physically hurt, I was belittled — I told I was worthless, that I would never amount to anything. The beatings stopped when I was fourteen, that was the day I finally raised my hand in defense. But the emotional abuse continued until I was about twenty-five.

Through all of this, one thing I always knew was that I had a heart of gold. No matter how much I was pushed and shoved, I never lost sight of who I was. What I endured could have broken a weaker soul. And yes, I had my years of pain and anguish—but I never lost faith. I never stopped believing that I was, and still am, a good person.

Am I perfect? Not even close. I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way. But I’ve kept my heart open to faith, to forgiveness, to acknowledging my flaws, to apologizing when necessary, and to embracing the truly wonderful person that I am.

That’s the story told in “Superstar (The Legend Lives On).” It’s a song of survival, endurance, and strength.

My Plea to You

If you’ve ever had a dream—one that has come true or one that you’re still chasing—I believe you’ll understand where I am right now.

Please, my dear friends, help me make this dream a reality. Add “Superstar (The Legend Lives On)” to your playlists on whichever streaming service you use—Spotify, Tidal, iTunes, Apple Music, Deezer, YouTube, Amazon. The song is on all of them. Share it with your friends. Links are provided after the song lyrics.

I truly, sincerely want to make a difference in someone’s life.

✨Thank you!✨

The Lyrics

The legend lives on

They say a classic never dies

But what about the tears you cry

While heading to the top

💛💛💛

The head trips and frustrations

Could make a weaker soul break down

But luckily inside I know

I've got a heart of gold

💛💛💛

It really doesn't take much

If you're going to make it in this world

Just keep your eyes wide open

And keep a little faith above

💛💛💛

Being the odd one out, the underdog, the different one

Makes you try just a little harder

💛💛💛

In this life

You've got to look

Straight ahead

Not back

Or they'll get you every time, every time

In this world of push and shove

Remember there is hope

Give yourself a chance to love, to love

💛💛💛

The legend lives on they say

A classic never dies

But what about the tears you cry

While heading to the top

💛💛💛

The head trips and frustrations

Could make a weaker soul break down

But luckily inside I know

I've got a heart of gold

💛💛💛

Your song (Superstar) is a reflection of your beautiful soul...I think I heard a bit of Santana's soul mix in there, too.. love your music, Rick. Blackbird makes me want to dance :) I so wish you continued success in your talent and passions.

Well-wrought, Rick! I'm sorry to hear about your troubled upbringing, but you're dealing with it in a constructive way, and I'm sure your songs will inspire many. I think the most important thing to realize about being an artist in any field is that what we've created must eventually fall into someone's hands, inspire someone, and hopefully inspire them to grand creations of their own. You're a great facilitator and artist in your own right. Take heart and stay strong!

  • Well done 🌹🌹🌹🌹
