Sherrionn Talks Music, Balance, and the Future of Women in R&B

@Sherrionn

By @OCLEADINLADYPublished 6 months ago 3 min read

Sherrionn is a Chicago-born singer, songwriter, and audio engineer whose music blends soul, storytelling, and raw emotion. Raised by a chosen family, her earliest memories include singing Erykah Badu songs while her brother beatboxed on a toy box—marking the beginning of a lifelong connection to music that’s as instinctive as it is inherited. Her mother was a vocalist and dancer; her father, a signed rapper. Music is truly in her DNA.

A natural performer from a young age, Sherrionn honed her craft in show choir throughout middle and high school—ultimately winning 1st place at a national solo competition in Nashville. She later became part of Donda’s House, the nonprofit co-founded by Rhymefest, where she deepened her artistry and gained performance experience across Chicago’s creative circuit.

In 2016, she began writing and producing original music, teaching herself how to record and mix. She earned a degree in Audio Engineering/Recording Arts from Tribeca Flashpoint (Columbia College) in 2019, giving her full creative control over her sound. Since then, she’s built a growing fanbase through her covers, remixes, and consistent online presence—earning reposts and recognition from major artists and producers.

After spending time in Atlanta to expand her reach, Sherrionn returned to Chicago in 2025, bringing with her a matured sound and a renewed focus. With a voice that commands attention and lyrics rooted in truth, she continues to carve her lane as an independent powerhouse—equally comfortable in front of the mic and behind the boards.

What does a typical day look like for you when balancing music, personal life, and downtime?

Honestly, I’m working on the “balance” part. Even when I have downtime, I’m prepping for what’s next in the midst. In a perfect world..for my free day with no music or social media involved? Wake up, a huge cup of coffee , a protein heavy breakfast, gym & retail therapy is a solid day for me. Simple.

Do you practice mindfulness or meditation? If so, how has it helped you?

I’m always in my head. During those moments prayer is usually what keeps me mindful and gives me strength to push through. My form of meditation is simply talking to God often.

What vocal exercises do you swear by before recording or performing?

If you want me to be honest, I’ve never had consistent vocal training. I don’t have a solid regimen. I’m working on maintaining one. However, since I thrive off of pressure and last minute things, I usually use a vocal warm up tape in the car right before a show. Or simple “Lip Trills”.

Do you remember the first time someone recognized you in public? How did it feel?

I can’t remember the first time I was recognized ,but lately it’s been pretty often and cool. The funny part is the most recent time. Someone noticed me from my funny Tik Tok Videos. They said “You’re the girl who slides across the floor in teddy bear house shoes on Tik Tok”…..yeah. I gotta promote my music more now.

How does fan love motivate you to keep creating music?

Fan love is honestly what keeps me going. It reminds me that people actually need and want what I have to give the world.

What’s your vision for women in R&B and music as a whole over the next few years?

My vision for women in R&B in a perfect world, collaboration over competition.

How has your YouTube vlog series strengthened your connection with fans compared to social media platforms like Instagram or TikTok?

My YouTube vlogs are like hidden gems for now. My day one supporters who tap into those usually tune in to see a more personal side of me. Sometimes they know and remember vlogs that I’ve forgotten, or request more life updates if I’ve been too idle on them . They help me realize how human I can be while also being related to. Tik tok has also grown supporters, but more on a fun creative side.

You’ve been featured on 4 Shooters Only From The Block series at least twice now . Have these appearances created new opportunities for you—whether collaborations, fanbase growth, or industry connections?

My For Shooters Only videos have definitely helped me reach new supporters and opportunities. More people are now aware of my brand and aesthetic musically and visually , especially from my hometown. It woke more people up.
