Seize the moment, Seize the song
The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
You wake up. Instinctively, you reach for your phone and scroll. Alongside the funny memes, CNN, and workout videos you notice heart emojis, flowers, and adoring couples.
You roll your eyes........hard. It's Valentine's Day. For five minutes, you continue to hate-scroll through Instagram. Luckily, you remember your New Year's resolution: less Instagram, more affirmations. You toss the phone aside and hop out of bed.
I'm great.
I have abundance.
I'm worthy of all good things.
But, the annoyance is still there. The affirmations turn into something else.
Valentine's day, what a stupid holiday!
It's all about consumerism!
Isn't this day based on a massacre?
You make a decision: this day will not get you down.
You call out to Siri to play a song that will keep you focused on all those non-love New Year's Resolutions you made.
"Headed to the top, so we can get a better view."
You get to work. As the flowers roll in from adoring husbands and boyfriends, you keep to yourself. Actually, you are the most productive you been since before Christmas. You close your door so you don't hear excerpts of Valentine day plans but eventually you do have to leave your office. Your growling stomach agrees.
As two day old spaghetti spins in the microwave in the kitchen, you listen to your co-workers tell you about their valentine's day plans. You smile and feign excitement. Honestly, you wonder how some of your co-workers even have a Valentine.
Susan gossips too much.
Wendy is always grumpy
Grace, well, Grace is just weird.
You're back at your desk, wishing you had just ate your spaghetti cold. You have no plans tonight. Before the pity party comes knocking out you door, you call out to Siri again. You need a reminder that you're a catch too!
"Damn right, it's better than yours."
Your girlfriend, Macy, calls you as you head home. Macy is recently single. She may or may not be bitter about that. You both swap war stories about your exes as you realize all the bullets you both have dodged.
"We are so much better without them!" She says.
After hanging up, you call on Siri as you remember all of your toxic exes.
"You thought my heart would be destroyed, look around cuz i'm chillin' boy!"
Another friend calls you just as slipped into some comfy pjs. Kelly is the happily married friend. She was once bitter but then found real love and hasn't looked back since. She's a little hesitant to tell you her plans but you insist. During the conversation, you say "I wish someone would do that for me." There's an awkward silence. Rebounding quickly, she tells you that you're awesome and love is around the corner. You roll your eyes so hard, she can hear it! You tell her to have fun on her date and you get off the phone.
You plop on the couch and channel surf. Of course, romantic comedies are on every channel expect for CNN. You don't want to watch the news. You don't want to NOT watch romantic comedies. I'm not that bitter, you tell yourself. You find one that you like.
Secretly, you're actually quite fond of this movie. You've seen it hundred times. But something weird happens this time. This particular scene you've seen a hundred times, it's different now.
You always thought he was the bad guy, but actually no.
You thought she was overreacting, but actually no.
Wait, that's gaslighting!
Wait, she's being very passive aggressive!
Wait, they are not communicating!!!!!!!!
Then you flashback to past relationships. You cringe. As you remember past scenes of your own love life, it hits you hard.
It wasn't all him. Yes, it was him. No.....no, it wasn't.
Suddenly, you're full of regret. You call out to Siri.
"I've been a fool and I've been blind."
What is your ex doing now? You wonder if he's happy? Still single? A smile spreads across you face as you think about the best thing he ever did for you. Then you remember another great thing he did for you and down the rabbit hole you go. For about ten minutes, you don't wish him dead.
Siri is called upon again.
"I'm giving you up , I've forgiven it all."
You pat yourself on the back. GROWTH! You wonder if those affirmations are working. There's two more hours lefts on this Valentine's day. You close the blinds in your apartment. As you stand in the middle of your living room, you call out to Siri again.
You know it's cliché.
Hey, it's cliché for a reason.
When the music starts, you dance and laugh. It's a great song about you.
You did the dance perfectly of course!
Happy Valentine's Day.
