See Me
A song for the Harmonic Verses challenge inspired by the Femen March for International Women's Day in Paris
Verse 1
Looking out, I see the rise
Of hatred in your eyes.
And I wonder why you boys
Are frightened of my noise?
It's taken years to find my tongue
Always told that it was wrong
And now that I can shout
You don't like what I'm about!
*
Bridge
Do you see me as a threat?
A thing to box up and forget?
I could be standing at your side
But you just want to deride
Me, not see me for myself
You'd rather place me somewhere else
Where I'm smothered and subdued
Only handled when you're in the mood
*
Chorus
But I am not a handmaid
I will not be a slave
I am not a trophy
I'm more than just a "she".
*
Verse 2
Watch me walk among the crowds
Mouth wide, protesting, loud!
We will not be silenced here
And we will not disappear.
Like a warrior of old,
I will fight for what I hold.
Bare my breast for all to see
Expose my feminine glory!
*
Bridge
Do you see me as a threat?
A thing to box up and forget?
I could be standing at your side
But you just want to deride
Me, not see me for myself
You'd rather place me somewhere else
Where I'm smothered and subdued
Only handled when you're in the mood
*
Verse 3
You do not want us here
But our legacy is clear.
The women that you crave
Live back there in the caves.
In our timely evolution
Comes the time for revolution
We will not force you to cow
But we won't be backing down!
*
Bridge
Do you see me as a threat?
A thing to box up and forget?
I could be standing at your side
But you just want to deride
Me, not see me for myself
You'd rather place me somewhere else
Where I'm smothered and subdued
Only handled when you're in the mood
*
Chorus
But I am not a handmaid
I will not be a slave
I am not a trophy
I'm more than just a "she".
*
Verse 4
We are mothers, we are girls,
We are bitches, we are pearls
We are savage, we're controlled
We have the fire to be bold.
We just want to be heard
A right that we deserve
We are here and we are strong
And we know that we belong.
*
Bridge
Do you see me as a threat?
A thing to box up and forget?
I could be standing at your side
But you just want to deride
Me, not see me for myself
You'd rather place me somewhere else
Where I'm smothered and subdued
Only handled when you're in the mood
*
Chorus
But I am not a handmaid
I will not be a slave
I am not a trophy
I'm more than just a "she".
*
Outro (repeat to fade)
See me!
See me!
Because I won't be backing down
I'm more than just a "she"!
See me!
See me!
Because I'm more than just a "she"
See me in my glory!

Suno helped me to create a song for my lyrics which I have attached here:
I do not think that I could paint myself and walk bare-breasted in the streets of Paris to protest but I admire the spirit of the women who did. I want to live in a world where women are valued for the many things that we embody and I do feel that that status is in danger of being eroded, if it's not happening already (some may argue it's never really been there in the first place). These women obviously feel that there is a clear and present danger and I stand with them against those who would want us to be less, whoever they are.

Excellent song and well expressed, with flowing rhythm and rhyme. The Suno tune was enjoyable too.
Outstanding lyrics, Rachel. I must give high praise for verse 4- I simply love it! I hope to see your name among the winners of this challenge. π₯°π₯°π₯°
I felt empowered reading this, Rachel. Absolutely loved the impact of words well chosen. Beautifully done.
Are you planning to make this into a song? I love the power is holds in every line. Very uplifting and on point with what is happening today. We definitely need more works like this during this tough times.
Fantastic song & message. Do you have a tune in mind?
Made me think soo, wonderful written .π§ββοΈπππ§ββοΈ
Great job, BRAVO!! if you lived in France, or perhaps more to the truth if you were a French woman , you could be like the French women and bury your breast and walk in the street. I guarantee it. πππΆ
Wow! What a powerful song and source of inspiration! Definitely had an anthem like feel to it and can imagine it set to some marching music with strong drum beats!
Brill - this really is a song for our time. So relevant. Made me think too - with all this 'stuff' that's going on right now, we could do with some women in senior govt roles to inject a little common sense and compassion into negotiations. There seems to be a lot of chest beating and posturing and I don't feel women really act like that. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed your song - especially the line about being smothered and subdued. Great stuff Rachel and good luck in the challenge.
Wonderfully Done!! I enjoyed the lyrics.
There is a real natural marching beat to this. Powerful. I would love to hear this sung to music. Do you play an instrument Rachel?
The women that you crave Live back there in the caves." These lines say a lot. I really wanna see someone sing this song. This is so powerful, Rachel. Loved it β€π The bridge? Every time it gave me goosebumps. Your words have the power to shake a MAN! To make him feel miserable. "I am more than just a SHE?" Yess! Yess π₯π₯ Deserves a Top Story, Rachel! β€
I think a lot of people forget that for most of history women were considered property to reproduce with, mainly because a lot of them died during childbirth. Women didn't get voting rights until 1920, and freedom to make decisions about their own lives until the 50's. What's worse is most people are taught from a young age; books that say women are lesser than men and are part of the world men were given dominion over. Until that stops women will always have to worry that their freedoms can be taken in any generation, but hopefully songs like this will keep women vigilant and help those that are still being treated as lesser people find their voice.
Oooo, I've never seen songs that has the bridge repeated so many times, so this was something new for me. Your lyrics were extremely powerful! I freaking loved it!
Brit-Bud - May I interlude for a moment with your lovely rendition - Misogynists - how dare them! So glad you wrote this - as I'm very much a proponent re; this cause. j.in.l.a.
Rachel, this is such a powerful entry!! I love it and feel so empowered reading it!!
Hell yeah. That's an anthem!
One of the most powerful poems I've seen on Vocal. I especially loved verse 4. Now more than ever all voices need to be heard.
Rock on, Rachel! I would love to hear this to music! Great song and good luck on the challenge!
I see you! And a great poem! πβ₯οΈ
