Sad Truth about What Happened to Seyi Shay Before Nigerian Idol Finale

So sad.

By Jide OkonjoPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

The Nigerian Idol finale show on Sunday was filled with a lot of emotions. From an emotional win to emotional speeches, the tears were flowing all through the show that night.

But there was one particular person during the show whose emotions didn’t seem to start at the end of the show like a lot of the other contestants and judges. For resident judge Seyi Shay, fans quickly noticed that there was something ‘off’ about her that night.

When she stepped out in a very big poofy dress to perform Jerusalema with the rest of the cast, nobody really noticed anything was up. That wasn’t until she got to the judging table and it became very apparent very quickly that something was up with the usually vibrant, loud, and energetic judge.

Throughout the 75 minutes runtime of the show, Seyi Shay barely spoke and in the times when she did speak, her voice was cracked. Viewers also pointed out that her eyes looked poofy and it seemed as though she had been crying.

Those viewers will in fact be right. Sunday was a very emotional day for singer Seyi Shay. This is why.

Seyi Shay Lost Her 'Dad'

Not her biological dad, but her musical father. Musician Sound Sultan’s death was announced on that morning of the show and what many people do not know is that Sound Sultan and Seyi Shay had a father-daughter relationship while he was alive. Seyi even once described him as the dad she never had.

Sound Sultan in a 2016 Soundcity interview when asked to present the next music video on the show which happened to be one by Seyi Shay said about her:

This video I really love, it’s close to my heart because it’s from my daughter and when I say my daughter, it’s my musical daughter. She’s one of the most talented Africans to walk this earth and I must say that she’s gifted, she’s talented. Seyi Shay happens to be my musical child and she’s a wonderful, gifted, and humble human being. I met her in London way back and when I heard her voice, I said ‘you be Naija and you dey here?’ She said she was signed to Matthew Knowles and I was like still, music is growing in Nigeria. Leave all that international stuff. You’ll get international from Naija. Since she came back, she’s been doing us proud.

Yes. Sound Sultan is the one who made Seyi Shay come back to Nigeria to pursue music and he’s the one that held her hand and walked her through the Nigerian music industry especially in those early years.

Seyi Shay said of Sound Sultan in an interview with Pulse:

I didn’t grow up with my dad. I didn’t meet my dad until quite late in my life because I was raised by my mom and my siblings pretty much in the UK. But I knew that when I met Sound Sultan, he was very very fatherly to me. He’s always been very encouraging. In fact, he’s the person that encouraged me the most to move back to Nigeria and continue with my musical career. He and I are very close. He’s my godfather in the music industry. My brother. His wife is my sister and one of my best friends.

Now that you understand how deep their relationship was, I hope you have a better understanding of why it was very hard for her to function and why she had been crying moments before the show.

May Sound Sultan’s beautiful and gentle soul rest in perfect peace.

That’s All.
