- If possible, leave a brief comment sharing your thoughts on each song.

After two weeks (on Monday evening), I will tally the ratings. I’ll announce the average rating each song receives, in the following Rate-O-Rama.

The Thirty-Sixth Edition features: The soulful pop-rock classic “The First Cut Is The Deepest”

🎸 Cat Stevens (1967) “The First Cut Is The Deepest” began its life in 1965 as a demo record that Cat Stevens used to promote himself as a songwriter. Finally in October 1967 Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam, recorded the song and included it on his second studio album New Masters.

Stevens sold the song to British soul singer P.P. Arnold who had a hit with the song in early 1967.

Stevens released the song as a single in Australia in 1972 to promote the compilation album The World of Cat Stevens. He has won two ASCAP songwriting awards for the song.

🎸 Trivia:

Famed producer Tom Dowd produced “The First Cut is the Deepest” and the album A Night on the Town. Dowd has also produced Ray Charles, Bobby Darin, The Drifters, The Spinners, Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman, Bee Gees, Chicago, Meatloaf, Diana Ross, Kenny Loggins, Sonny and Cher, Eagles, and too many more to mention.

🎤 Sheryl Crow (2013) Sheryl Crow's version of "The First Cut Is the Deepest", inspired by Rod Stewart's version, is the first single released from her 2003 compilation album The Very Best of Sheryl Crow. It became one of Crow's biggest radio hits, peaking at No. 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song stayed on the Hot 100 for 36 weeks and became a gold seller, also reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary, Adult Top 40, and Triple-A charts. Internationally, it was a top-40 success in Austria, Hungary, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, and the UK.

Bonus Trivia Question

Who did Cat Stevens originally want to record “The First Cut is the Deepest?

  • Sam Cooke
  • Wilson Pickett
  • Otis Redding

My Thoughts

🎸 Cat Stevens: Cat Stevens’ vocal performance here is excellent. Right from the very beginning Stevens had the ability to sing his songs with soul and emotion. “The First Cut is the Deepest” is one of the great love songs of all time and Cat Stevens did write it which gives him a boost. However, I don’t care much for the musical arrangement. The tempo change from the verse to the chorus takes away some of the intimacy of the song. My Rating: 97

🎤 Rod Stewart: and my humble of opinions Rod Stewart has the definitive version of this song. He may not have written it but he sings it like he wrote it. Stewart owns this song with his raspy voice yet highly impassioned reading. My Rating: 99

🎤 Sheryl Crow: her vocal performance on this is executed very well. She infuses just the right amount of emotion. The musical arrangement of course is also very well done. My only problem with it is it’s a bit too similar to Rod Stewart’s recording. My Rating: 90

Trivia Answers

  • Linda Ronstadt. It was a live tribute to Cat Stevens which was aired on the ABC television network in 1973.
  • “I Don’t Want To Talk About It”
  • Utah
  • Bonus: Otis Redding, but his manager instead gave it to P.P. Arnold.

Cat 100 Rod 85 Cheryl 75 I heard cat steven's version first, so "the first cut" is the deepest.

  • Wooohooooo congratulations on your Leaderboard placement! 🎉💖🎊🎉💖🎊

I'm basing my answers on whether or not I would want to watch/listen again. My first place is Sheryl with a score of 90. Second is Cat Stevens with 85. He also gets extra credit for penning the song! That leaves Rod. I'm not a big fan of his gravelly voice, so I'll give him 80. Fun concept! I like the added trivia. I didn't really know the answers, but fun to contemplate/look up.

Much as I like Sherly Crow I would have to say Rod is the rock god and certainly, as you say his is the definitive recording. Also, I was wondering along the sea front in Amalfi Italy a couple of years ago and saw a guy walking the other way who looked just like him. Turns out he was on vacation there too. I only wished I had said hello but he looked liked he was enjoying his solitary stroll. As definitive, it rates 100. Stevens 50, Crow 40

I love this song. It says so much. My favourite version is P P Arnolds. But of those listed here, I think Rod Stewart's just edges it. So Cat Stevens 85 Rod Stewart 87 Sheryl Crow (who I love) 84. But all great versions.

Oh, how come I didn't see this game before? Cat Stevens is 120/100 for me ❤️

  • S. A. Crawford7 months ago

Rod is a solid 90 for the rasp in his voice, Sheryl comes in at 85 because she always makes me cry. Cat gets 70 because it's good but not quite my taste.

I was the first to comment I wonder what happen to my comment before??? ROD 90, Sherly 85 and then Cat 55

  • Lamar Wiggins7 months ago

I like this song a lot, maybe because Cheryl's version was the first time I remember hearing it. So, with this one, sorry everyone but Cherly did it for me. Cat- 85 Rod - 80 Cheryl - 90

  • Cheryl 100 Rod 99 Cat 90 I am a fan of all. I like Cheryl and the way the guitar tweaks and the even refined voice of Cheryl Crow. She rates 100

  • Tiffany Gordon7 months ago

Rod 97 I love his raspy voice Cat 85 Sheryl 83

  • Sandy Gillman7 months ago

I've always loved this song! My order of preference is: Rod Stewart 98 - Probably because this is the first version I ever heard. Cat Stevens 96 Sheryl Crows 80 - I didn't even know this version existed until today.

I love your rate-o-ramas! Such a cute video you made, too! I always look for the singer that made me BELIEVE the words from the song and that was Rod Stewart! 100 Then would be Cat Stevens, 90, and Sheryl Crowe would get 50. I failed the trivia test, but enjoyed it.

    Rod Stewart-96 Sheryl Crowe-91 Cat Stevens-87

My first choice is the P.P. Arnold, her voice and the musical arrangement are a blend of perfection, however she is not on the list sooooo 98- Rod Stewart. - Soulful raspy voice sings with emotion AND seriously the only man who can pull off wearing horizontal and vertical stripes as a fashion. 94- Cat Steven’s - absolutely love this man’s voice and music, yet this song felt like we knew it wasn’t written by him. Yet he did add his own style 93- Sheryl Crowe - excellent version and beautiful voice yet unoriginal version, no personal touch

  • In order if preference for me would be Sheryl Crow Cat Stevens Rod Stewart
