Option B: An Original Song On Toxic Peer Relationships
Friendships Can Change You for the Worst - Lyrics Demo
Verse 1
Awake all night
Fake and not right
Why can't I stop these gears?
I took a bite
Now my lips are white
The poison apple sneers
Pre-Chorus
They lie, they lie, they lie, lie
They shouldn't've even tried
They lie, they lie, they lie, lie
They lie, they lie, they lie, lie
Moving their mouth all the time, time
They lie, they lie, they lie, lie
Chorus
'Cause they're looking for the one
But the one is not me
'Cause I'm always gonna be
Be their Option B
Yeah they're looking for the one
But the one is not me
'Cause I'm always gonna be
Be their Option B
And I keep saying, "Whatever, whatever,"
But I know they don't really mean forever
Yeah they're looking for the one
But the one is not me
'Cause I'm always gonna be
Be their Option B
Verse 2
They promised me life
But I got a knife
It's great to be the fourth wheel
They're high in the sky
My thoughts? I deny
I don't got a heart of steel
Pre-Chorus
They lie, they lie, they lie, lie
They shouldn't've even tried
They lie, they lie, they lie, lie
They lie, they lie, they lie, lie
Moving their mouth all the time, time
They lie, they lie, they lie, lie
Chorus
'Cause they're looking for the one
But the one is not me
'Cause I'm always gonna be
Be their Option B
Yeah they're looking for the one
But the one is not me
'Cause I'm always gonna be
Be their Option B
And I keep saying, "Whatever, whatever,"
But I know they don't really mean forever
Yeah they're looking for the one
But the one is not me
'Cause I'm always gonna be
Be their Option B
Bridge
'Cause they're looking for the–
Yeah, they're looking for the–
I keep saying, "Whatever, whatever,"
But I know they don't really mean forever
Yeah, they're looking for the one
But the one is not me
'Cause I'm always gonna be–
Chorus
'Cause they're looking for the one
But the one is not me
'Cause I'm always gonna be
Be their Option B
Yeah they're looking for the one
But the one is not me
'Cause I'm always gonna be
Be their Option B
And I keep saying, "Whatever, whatever,"
But I know they don't really mean forever
Yeah they're looking for the one
But the one is not me
'Cause I'm always gonna be
Be their Option B
I wrote this song for the reason anyone writes a song:
it needed to be said.
Never felt lonelier than when I was part of that friendship quartet.
The wishing, the longing, the aching—
all the cliché teenage dreaming.
My identity got swallowed by the person I thought they needed me to be.
And still, in the end, they left—
seeing me as the bad guy in the story.
Listening to Avril Lavigne, I don’t miss being 16 or 17.
I remember how cruel those kids could be–
how cruel I was expected to be to myself.
And when my attachment style surfaced,
it wasn’t met with care or curiosity—
but paranoia and repulsion.
I was just a kid who wanted to be loved,
wanted to be needed,
didn’t want to be used—
just to be seen, to be felt, to be cared for.
In celebration of being tired of being punished,
I dance to the thought:
They're now never going to be my Option B.
It’s strange, growing up.
I don’t bat an eye at the people
I thought I’d have to please for the rest of my life.
