My 2020 Playlist

This year we faced many trials and tribulations. It felt like stepping back in time when racism hit harder then ever following the death of George Floyd. Looting, destruction, police brutality, and protest were at an all time high. The pandemic COVID-19 quarantined the world as death spread hard and fast throughout the world. There really was nowhere to turn but music has a tendency of getting you through some of the toughest of time if artist sing about what matters, sing fun songs, or songs that get us moving. This is the top 20 songs that I enjoyed in 2020.

I start with my female MC's, Mulatto, Meg thee Stallion, and Cardi B. The songs B*tch from da Souf, WAP, Body, and Savage original and remix with Beyonce I enjoyed. All these songs expressed strong woman sexuality. I loved that these ladies said what they wanted to, when they wanted to, and how they wanted to. I know these songs got me up and twerking like Thick by DJ Chose and Meg thee Stallion did. I loved that Thick got me moving and had me smiling because of the humor of the song. Savage was my anthem and the remix with Beyonce was epic. I love the vibe of Meg the Stallion, she's such a talented lyricist. It's great to see female MC's out doing their thing again. Meg the Stallion solidified herself as a fire female MC, can't wait to see what's next with her.

Doja Cat caught my attention this year with her song Say So original and the remix with Nicki Minaj. This song had that old school and new school vibe about it and I loved that. I loved the homage paid to the 80s and how the lyrics were new school. I love that Nicki Minaj got on this track and showed Doja Cat some female to female MC love. Next up is ChloexHalle, they came out swinging and both the original and the remix of Do It were fire. The world has watched these girls grow up. They went from doing covers on YouTube, to starring in movies. and tv shows, to getting signed by Beyonce. They grew up so fast and it's been a long time coming for these two girls, they worked hard. ChloexHalle and Meg thee Stallion, both artist had people moving and challenges appeared for their songs that got people up grooving during this quarantine.

Then of course we had our unique artist like Ari Lennox, Weeknd, and Ariana Grande. Ari Lennox like my girls Cardi B, Meg thee Stallion, and Mulatto said what she wanted with her song Bussit. She said it in a soulful and smooth way. She's unique with her soulful bad girl vibes. Weeknd paid homage to the old days with his song Blinding Lights. He always puts a twist on all his songs. He definitely had me dancing and singing, and he's such a unique artist that we all just wait to see what he'll do next. Who doesn't have Ariana Grande in their list? Positions made my playlist this year; she's so talented and I'm always interested in what she'll do next as a unique pop R&B artist. Summer Walker whose like a R&B hip hop artist made my play list too with Come Thru which featured Usher and his a song clip from his song You Make Me Wanna. This collabo was awesome because Usher is an artist from my R&B days in the 90s to 2000s. I loved the throwback, and speaking of 90s artists, Monica came out with Trenches and I love that song. Monica is one of my favorite artist of all time and although Trenches is new it made me remember why I'm such a loyal fan of hers since her Don't Take It Personal days.

Afro beats were big this year as more African-American people started to want to get back to their roots and support each other more. I've been a fan of Ms. Kelly Rowland since her Destiny Child days so when she dropped Hitman I was grooving and glad to see her back after a music hiatus, she dropped a few things here and there but Hitman was the hit for me. Not only was the song a hit but she did it all while pregnant. She dropped some music and some tv movies as this year is closing out, and I was here for it all. We can't begin to talk about Afro beats without mentioning Ms. Yonce herself who dropped the Black is King visual. My Power was just what I needed as the African-American society seemed to be watching racism and police brutality at an all time high, My Power reminded us to stand strong in the face of adversity. Ciara dropped Rooted to remind us to stay rooted and strong no matter what. Mariah Carey dropped Save The Day and John Legend dropped Bigger Love both telling us to stay strong as a society and safe during this pandemic that a better tomorrow is on the horizon and quarantine won't last forever but in the mean time let's show love the best way we can and keep one another safe.

In conclusion, for me music has always been the light in the darkest times. I appreciate all the artist that continued making music and giving hope in this dark time. Many artists continued to make music regardless of how much changed in one year. Many artists had great songs that they dropped during this tough period, artist like Brandy, Toni Braxton, Alicia Keys, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, and many more. They gave hope to all including essential workers like myself and all our essential workers on the frontlines. Music gives me life and I'm grateful to them all for doing what they could for society.
