Let’s Keep The Blood Off The Dance Floor

Angsty songs that helped me , and many MySpace era teens cope through our teens.

By Misha AlslebenPublished 5 years ago 8 min read

You are going to a deserted island you can only take 5 things , what are you taking?

My answer, my husband, kids, cat and music with whatever can play said music and never die maybe a solar powered generator. I am confident we could figure it out from there.

Disney music shaped my childhood , my angsty teen taste with many genres saved me on the darkest days equally filling the good ones, and now I still can’t imagine my life without music.

We the 1990s babies became angsty the year 2000 teens.

We scraped by or barely remember y2k, lived off morning cartoons, and soon after dial-up internet.

We witnessed the beginnings of social media and YouTube ,spending far too much time unsupervised on the internet.

We lived a life that was in a way on the brink of a century, we came from one era leading into the next.

Our technology and events led to what we have today because make no mistake, if our parents hadn’t dealt with record players and 8 tracks.

While we got the cassettes, walk-men, and boom boxes we wouldn’t have seen the days of the iPod shuffle. Only to be graced with the calming presence of progress with the iPod touch as we neared the end of our teens. As for the teens today you can imagine that the Bluetooth speakers many of us have come to love and the ability to play music from our phones vs a bulky device wouldn’t have happened without the innovations we lived through.

Of course, while we lived through that epic time, I firmly believe that We were also one of the most depressed generations.

Teen angst came to a new level, and our music ,social media and our stores like hot topic fed the angst further.

Not that that’s a bad thing, because in the end we had outlets , we opened society to start being more accepting and stop expecting “normal” from everyone.

Also just so I’m clear it was this hot topic that helped shaped us teens

Not this one, and should this article find a gen z reader just know I don't hate new hot topic but I don’t love it either but I promise you. You would have loved the old hot topic, and Tripp jeans and clothing, bring those back please , but maybe this time around , be a tad more size-inclusive.

Yeah, I remember those days, especially warped tour 2009.

Maybe you do too, let’s listen to some music. Then take a peek at the days they got me through and where some of the artists are now.

My teen years were far from normal.

I grew up sheltered and in a home that wasn’t always my favorite place to be, for numerous reasons.

I spent my freshmen year catching up after taking time off school due to my grandparents death, then in sophomore year I began having health issues which led to me being in and out of the hospital. Until I finally had my appendix removed which had been ruptured but was un-infected for a year and a half.

A year after that I had my ghal bladder surgery. Let me just say that there really isn’t much to do in hospitals throughout testing s and then recovery after surgeries. I had complications with Mughal bladder that led to a even longer stay than normal for most people. During this I went to online high school instead of regular but was lucky enough to still have meet ups with students and we even had a prom.

Music and the artists I came to admire that got me through the good days as much as the bad was how I made it out of those angsty years in one piece.

About 3/4 through my fifteenth year in life the health issues and some home issues led me to develop a self injury issue. I cut for almost 5 years and , I am happy to say I am fully recovered and self harm free for over 9 years, going on 11 to be exact.

Artists like P!nk , Saving Jane, Echosmith , Hollywood Undead and Others on this playlist were there for me on the days I cried on my bedroom floor , or felt great and went rollerblading around town.

From Teardrops On My Guitar getting me through my first heartbreak to Screaming Perfect in my room after my family had brushed off or made a major accomplishment not feel good enough. Dancing to blood on the dance floor because the reaction from your parents were just as good as their music. These artists are the reason I made it through the days that I didn’t think I could or the days that the cotton candy coouds graced the sky and I begged for the day to never end.

I have a question for you though,

Does Bowling For Soups 1985 Hit different now that we are all almost 30 ?

Well that’s ok because you can skip hitting the wall, but one Prozac a day and ditiching the plan isnt such a bad thing.

If you‘re happy that’s all that matters and if you feel like you’ve became Debbie , well it’s never to late to make change and regardless it’s hard to not jump every-time this classic comes across my Pandora or Spotify stations.

While I struggled with self harm I never was suicidal though the local high school did have a High suicide rate and it remains high throughout the US, there is one song that made me get the help I needed and also watch out for friends who may also need help. Rather it’s a eating disorder , depression, self harm , always being there for one another was something else that got us through it all, especially the days we’d walk around town sharing headphones.

The band and song

Anti-flag This Is The End

For my sanity can somebody please tell me what Nickelback ever did to us that they are now like the most hated band ever ?

I really don’t get it unless they did something inherently horrible that I am unaware of. I vividly remember singing there songs in angst and then rocking out to the release of animals to our parents horror.

As for gaining the confidence I wish I would of had then Johnny Diaz was there to change my opinion and set me up for my future of loving myself just as much as I loved others.

I know all of these artists fed my teen angst and equally helped me.

Good Days or Bad, they came through.

I hope you have enjoyed listening and reading this far !
