@KeepushinKp on Self-Made Strength, Collaborating with Seddy Hendrix and Mr. Flawda, and Staying True to Herself

“SOUTHERN BELLE” OUT NOW

By @OCLEADINLADYPublished 8 months ago 3 min read

Let’s get into it—you survived something a lot of people don’t walk away from. What’s the first thing that went through your mind when it happened?

At first, I thought someone was just playing with fireworks in my garage. I had just gotten back to home from a performance, and it didn’t even register that someone might be trying to shoot me—I don’t live that kind of lifestyle. I didn’t realize I was getting shot until the guy ran and I saw blood.

Have you learned any hacks or rituals that keep you grounded while the world’s spinning around you?

I try to start every day with affirmations—speaking life over myself really helps set the tone. Hitting the gym is another major part of my routine. Working out clears my mind and reminds me that I’m in control of how I show up in the world. I’ve learned that staying positive isn’t just a mindset—it’s a discipline. Even when things feel chaotic, I lean into those rituals to stay centered and focused.

There’s this pressure to always look flawless, be unbothered, stay “on brand.” Does that ever mess with your sense of self?

Yeah, sometimes it does. I’m really just a laid-back, country girl at heart—more of a tomboy than anything. So constantly having to be polished and “on” can throw me off a little. But I’ve learned to remind myself that it’s part of the job. That mindset helps me not overthink it. I stay true to who I am behind the scenes, and that balance keeps me grounded.

What’s the biggest “I told y’all” moment you’ve had on your journey?

I haven’t had that big “I told y’all” moment yet—but I know it’s coming. Honestly, just the fact that I never quit is a statement in itself. Every accomplishment I’ve had so far, no matter how small, is proof of growth and resilience. That’s the quiet “I told you” that speaks the loudest.

Do you ever feel pulled between what’s “hot right now” and what’s real to you? How do you balance the two?

Sometimes, yeah. What’s “hot right now” isn’t always me, and I’m okay with that. But if we’re talking about what’s real, I believe you can always find a way to make it hit. Trends come and go, but authenticity lasts. I try to stay true to myself and still find creative ways to connect with what’s current—without losing my identity.

You’ve been on tracks with some notable guys —what’s it really like stepping in the booth with them? Ego clash or mutual respect?

To be honest, I haven’t physically been in the booth with Seddy Hendrix nor Mr.Flawda —most of the collaborations came together remotely. But even without being in the same room, there’s still a level of appreciation and authenticity that comes through when the music blends right. It’s less about ego and more about creating something dope that both sides respect.

Do you ever feel like you’re walking a tightrope—be sexy, but not “too” sexy; be lyrical, but not “too” deep? How do you flip that on ‘em?

Unfortunately, yes—especially as a female artist, it’s the same narrative and critique over and over. It can feel like people are never satisfied. But I know what I bring to the table is a real balance of sex appeal and genuine, authentic music. Some might say something is “too sexy” or “too much,” but I know my intention and my artistry. It is a tightrope, but I stay consistent, keep putting out real music, and focus on building with people who connect with it. At the end of the day, not everybody’s gonna like everything—and that’s okay.

That's some intense stuff. When you thought it was fireworks at first, that's wild. I can relate to finding balance. Like, I've got work projects that are trendy, but I also stick to my tried-and-true methods. How do you decide which parts of the trendy stuff to incorporate into your routine? Also, the affirmations and gym routine sound great. Do you ever struggle to keep up with them, especially when things get crazy? I'd love to hear how you stay consistent.
