"It's a Sign" - The Flip Phones Deliver Whimsy, Depth and Indie Pop Perfection.
A Playful Indie Pop Song that asks the Question: Are we in Control or Just Following the Signs?

The Flip Phones have a knack for blending vibrant storytelling with infectious melodies, and their latest single, "It’s a Sign," is no exception.
Drawing inspiration from Los Angeles' quirky Happy Foot/Sad Foot sign - a podiatry clinic’s rotating marquee that locals once turned into a playful daily fortune-telling ritual - this track is as whimsical as its muse.
But beneath the buoyant surface lies a deeper exploration of how we navigate our lives: do we steer our own course, or are we at the mercy of signs, symbols, and superstition?

Lindsey and Ryan, the duo behind The Flip Phones, have always brought an intriguing blend of creativity and musicality to their work.
Lindsey, who is a classically trained pianist and flutist, infuses the song with her signature touch of instrumental sophistication. Her electric piano sets a lush, rhythmic foundation, while the unexpected addition of melodica adds a playful, almost dreamlike quality to the arrangement. Her lyrical storytelling is vivid and clever, painting a world where the lines between chance and intention blur.
Ryan’s jangly guitar lines provide the perfect complement to Lindsey’s textured melodies. Self-taught and steeped in the sounds of The Beatles, Blur, and The Kinks, Ryan’s guitar work anchors the track in a timeless indie-rock vibe, lending it a warmth that feels both familiar and fresh.
The chemistry between their vocal performances - Lindsey’s bright, dynamic delivery paired with Ryan’s steady harmonies - creates a sense of balance that mirrors the song’s thematic tug-of-war between control and fate.
The Flip Phones’ journey to this point has been one of evolution.
After the dissolution of their former band, North of Canada, in 2013, Lindsey and Ryan embarked on a new chapter, creating a sound that would become uniquely theirs.
Their debut EP, Better in the Dark (2022), introduced fans to their layered, storytelling-driven approach to indie-pop. With "It’s a Sign," they push their boundaries, leaning into more playful influences like the B-52s, R.E.M., and even Gorillaz. The melodica, in particular, evokes a sense of whimsical unpredictability that feels right at home in this sonic landscape.
The single was brought to life with the help of producer Dave Mallen at Innovation Station Music in Annandale, VA. Mallen, known for his ability to capture an artist’s essence, ensures the song retains the electric energy of Lindsey and Ryan’s live performances. Those performances have become a hallmark of The Flip Phones’ appeal. Over more than 40 shows across the mid-Atlantic, including appearances at festivals like Roanoke Festival in the Park and beloved venues such as Jammin Java and Songbyrd, the duo has built a reputation for their engaging and dynamic stage presence.
"It’s a Sign" is the first glimpse into The Flip Phones’ forthcoming EP, Spinning Adrift", set for release in spring 2025.
As a lead single, it’s a perfect choice: catchy, thought-provoking, and brimming with personality. The song’s effervescent instrumentation and clever lyrical themes make it an instant mood booster, while the duo’s tight musicianship ensures it lingers long after the final notes fade.
With this release, The Flip Phones prove that indie-pop can be both fun and introspective. "It’s a Sign" isn’t just a song - it’s a conversation starter, an earworm, and a reminder that even the most whimsical moments in life can hold deeper meaning. As we wait for the rest of Spinning Adrift to unfold, one thing is clear: The Flip Phones are a band that knows how to find magic in the everyday.
