iPod Shuffling Madness

A nostalgic music trip with my iPod

There are many things in our lives that bring us a strong sense of nostalgia. One such thing that brings me a wave of nostalgia is my iPod.

I've not used my iPod for nearly a month. Actually, longer than that. I couldn't tell you the last time I updated it with some newly downloaded songs. With the rise of music streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, the Apple I-Pod has joined the outdated club right with the CD, cassette tape, and vinyl record (actually, vinyl is making a comeback).

I saved up my money and got an i-Pod, a device that all of the "cool kids" seemed to have, and I longed to have. Just think! A wide assortment of songs, a wild blend of genres contained on one device.

I wasn't that lame kid with the portable CD player anymore. I had an I-Pod. Of course, my portable CD player has brought some fond memories as well!

I listened to that i-Pod just about every day in high school without fail. On the bus ride to and from school, during any free study / reading time when we were free to work on homework, read a book or just do something quiet.

I had almost every genre on it. Pop, rock, country, hip hop … classics from as far back as the 60's to the late 2010's.

My i-Pod has been kept on my dresser collecting dust. While I don't play it near as much as I used to, I can put it on the dock of my alarm clock (the only device I have to play it) and it STILL plays!

Every once in a blue moon, I will play it for old time's sake and I'll be transported back in time.

Why not take others along with me on a nostalgic journey as I put my I-Pod on shuffle?

I will put my i-Pod on shuffle and talk about the 10 songs that come up.

Fair warning! Don't be surprised to jump from hip-hop to country before landing on hard rock then some movie score.

Incense and peppermints (1967) - Strawberry Alarm Clock

I've always liked this song. It's definitely one of my favorites from the 60's. It's so refreshing! While the 60's era was way before my time, I get a strong sense of fond nostalgia anytime I hear this song. My late uncle listened and grew up with this kind of music and hearing this song takes me back to when we would spend the weekend listening to some 60's era music.

Something Bad (2014)- Miranda Lambert (feat. Carrie Underwood)

I haven't downloaded any new songs to my iPod in forever. The funny thing about that is sometimes I'll come across a few songs that I totally forgot about. This song is a perfect example. I don't remember downloading it, but I must have liked it enough at some point to do so!

It has a solid blend of pop country and edgy elements of rock.

Wait a Million Years (1969) - The Grass Roots

I guess my iPod decided that we weren't quite done with the 60's! Here's another great song from the 60's era - one I haven't heard in forever.

It starts out slow but soon becomes upbeat and lyrically moving. An ideal song to just chill out to.

Great! Now I want to listen to 60's music now!

Underneath It All (2001) - No Doubt

I was a huge fan of No Doubt back in high school. Still am! This song is so mellow with the energy of lounging on a tropical island.

Paralyzer (2007) - Finger Eleven

Ah! This takes me back to my high school days. At the time, this song was definitely over played. A little dark and mysterious, it has heavy yet mild hard rock elements with edgy guitar riffs and vocals.

People are Strange (1967) - The Doors

This song has always made me feel better about being different and made me feel less alone. We're all weird in our own way, aren't we? It's easy one of the songs the iconic band, The Doors is known for.

Makes Me Wonder (2007) - Maroon 5

Here is another song that takes me back to my high school days. I listened to this song on my i-Pod a lot. I was a huge fan of Maroon 5 in high school. While I preferred their alternative rock era, their shift to pop wasn't too bad. This one of theirs isn't bad at all.

I Love This Bar (2003)- Toby Keith

I'm not much of a country music fan but Toby Keith is one such exception. Being down to earth, it was his songs that made me appreciate country. May he rest in peace!

This song is about that special bar in town that everyone knows about. The kind of bar that gives a warm welcome to anyone that comes in. The kind of place that almost feels like a second home, the people like family.

U Can't Touch This (1990) - MC Hammer

Looks like we're going from 2000's country to some 90's hip hop. Fast, upbeat, and incredibly dance worthy, this song is one of those rarities that will never go out of style.

Africa (1982) - Toto

I probably couldn't have picked a better song to conclude this random playlist. This is one of the most iconic songs by Toto and the 80's in general. While it's probably overplayed, I don't think I could really tire of listening to it.

Well, that was a journey! The most exciting part about this was that I had no idea what songs I'd be sharing with you. I hoped it wouldn't come to a point where people might question my taste in music! 🤣

Kidding!

Looks like there was a decent variety here. Maybe 10 songs aren't enough to make a judgement, but it offered some idea of how diverse my taste in music is.

Thank you for coming along on this journey!
