Henry Maybury's new doodled inspired song "Starship"

Singer/Songwriter/Producer, Henry Maybury, released a new song called "Starship" Out now on all music platforms. 12 year old, Jesse Whale, played lead guitar on the song. The song was inspired by the artwork of Jesse's twin brother, aka "The Doodle Boy".

Q: What 1st drew you to music?

I’ve always had a passion for music and songwriting but my first experience of performing was in a school concert and once I got that buzz of performing and being creative I couldn’t stop!

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Your (music) background?

I am a singer songwriter and I play guitar. I studied Music with Musical Theatre at the University Of Chichester Conservatoire and outside my music I love to watch Rugby and Football. I’m a big England Rugby supporter and Aston Villa fan.

Q: Are you signed to a label, or would you like to be?

I’m not signed to a label but I have worked with Grammy Nominated Music Producer Jon Cohen writing and producing songs together. This was an incredible experience and we wrote a lot of songs and I will be releasing some in 2022!

Q: Do you have a preferred or chosen music genre?

I enjoy listening to all genres of music and I consider that as one of my strengths when it comes to writing as you need to be versatile in todays industry. If I had to name my top 3, I would say…pop rock, acoustic pop and musical theatre.

Q: Do you write your own music, or do you collaborate?

I do both! I wrote ‘Starship’ on my own but I have some upcoming projects where I did some co-writing. I really enjoy co-writing because having another mind can take your song into a completely new direction and sometimes that really works!

Q: Your new single “Starship” is about “The Doodle Boy”. Tell us a little about “The Doodle Boy” and what inspired you to write this song.

The Doodle Boy has over 115,000 followers on Instagram and has just signed a deal with Nike. He is world renowned for his doodle artwork and he is ONLY 12 YEARS OLD! I saw a lot of Joe’s space doodles and then the Starship song just came to me.

Q: Were there any challenging aspects to writing and/or recording the song?

I wouldn’t say challenges but we had a lot of preparation. Joe’s twin brother Jesse Whale played lead guitar on the song and I did some guitar lessons with Jesse to teach him the guitar parts for the song as Jesse had only been playing guitar for just over a year. This was also his first time in a recording studio and they can be quite intimidating especially if it’s your first time, but Jesse did an amazing job!

Q: Do you have any other plans relating to this release? A video?

Yes, we have a music video coming out in the next couple of weeks! The music video is going to be of Joe (The Doodle Boy) telling a story through his doodle artwork followed by a couple of surprises! Joe is extremely talented and it’s pretty amazing seeing him in his element creating his doodles so this video is definitely worth watching!

Q: It looks like 2021 has been a creative year. Does this have anything to do with the pandemic or just feeling creative?

I really enjoy being creative and I think the lockdowns just gave me more of an incentive to pick up the guitar and write some songs and record some music.

Q: What is the best song you released to date and why?

I honestly believe ‘Starship’ is the best song I have released so far and I really hope listeners like it! I like the acoustic pop sound but there’s also a bit of a Disney influence.

Q: What song do fans seem to favor?

I know my songs ‘Every Night and Day’ and ‘Lost Days’ connected with a lot of people because of the strong messages behind them about mental health and addiction. But the people who listen to my music have always been supportive with all my new releases and I can’t thank them enough for the support!

Q: Has your style evolved since the beginning of you career?

The music industry moves so fast nowadays so I always like to move with the times and stay modern but I will always keep the music real to me and never change who I am.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being a musician?

Performing in front of fans and being creative in a studio writing songs.

Q: Do you create music for yourself or for fans?

For both! Songwriting can be like therapy especially when I’m going through a hard time, I put pen to paper and I can create some of my strongest material as they’re so real and honest. But then I want these songs to connect with the public and for them to gain something from listening to my songs.

Q: What would be your ideal press headline, either now or in the future? In which publication? Why?

“Henry Hits High Notes with new record” featured in Pitchfork. It would be amazing to feature in such a famous online music publication.

Q: Would you like to travel to other countries to perform your music? If so, what would be your first stop?

I’d love to perform around the United States Of America!

Q: Are there any musicians who inspire you? What qualities do you admire about them?

Olivia Rodrigo, Snow Patrol and Shawn Mendes are all such incredible writers and they always deliver strong vocals.

Q: Other than fame & fortune, is there something you hope to achieve through music?

I’m also really passionate about subjects such as Mental Health & Addiction because unfortunately my brother died to alcoholism at just 29 years old. I want to be able to raise lots of awareness about these topics and also try and help those who are struggling.

Q: Are you currently working on any projects we should look out for?

I’m currently working on some new songs and getting ready to release them over the next couple of months. I also have a documentary out in memory of my brother and you can watch it by going to: www.henrymaybury.com
