I've never been one to enjoy scary movies. I've never appreciated the feeling of adrenaline rushing through my body, unbidden, from sudden fright. Yet that's not all Halloween is, is it? It's not just about being scared, it's about the pageantry. Besides the candy, I'd say the éclat is my favorite part. One of the best ways to experience it is with a large gathering: a party.
However, to enhance a party's atmosphere, one has to give careful consideration to the music that will be played. A lot of parties will feature dub-step and/or EDM beats. Some will stick to the classics. Others will simply google around for a playlist and choose one they find on the internet. While I am attending a party this year, I'm not the one in charge of music, so consider this playlist my vicarious venture.
There wasn't an over-abundance of thought put into this, I'll be the first to admit. Many of these songs are either those that I heard in the past or songs I discovered while not purposefully looking for Halloween music. It's a bountiful offering though, at 5 hours and 40 minutes of playtime. Obviously, shuffle is your friend here.
My personal musical taste has always been a bit all over the place, from metal to pop to rock to alternative. Throw in jazz, classical, and even a few rap songs and that's my enigmatic musical preference. In this playlist, you'll find a little bit of everything. I admit there are probably more rock songs than you ever imagined on this list, several classic Halloween tunes (how could anyone leave off Monster Mash?), some pop and bright beats that belay their intense lyrics, and even a country song or two. I suppose you could consider this playlist an amalgamation.
A monster all in its own right.
Personally, I think it's important to cut your scary, extreme songs with those that have a bit more cheer to the music, if not the lyrics. I know, it's maybe a little annoying to some of you who focus on the music and not the words, but hopefully, there will be some of you out there who, like me, focus on the lyrics.
I can't definitively claim this playlist will appeal to everyone, inevitably there will be different tastes. I can say that while I didn't put a TON of thought into this, I did put a lot of effort into it. There were many songs I thought about but ended up leaving out. My goal was to create a playlist that would be danceable while also having legitimately "spooky" tunes, as well as that cut of brighter beats. There are a lot of songs perfect for dancing on this playlist, and also a ton of bangers.
Maybe it won't appeal to your normal musical taste, but if you give it a chance, you might see it appeals to your Halloween taste. One great thing about holidays is how they pull us from our norms. Our comfort zones seem to magically expand to include new themes, colors, music, and movies. You might have Christmas music any other time but December (barring those of you who hate it year-round), and maybe you don't like scary movies except in October. I find that Halloween serves a similar way in what music we enjoy and find tolerable.
Give it a listen on shuffle! Dance like monsters, party hard for this beautifully aligned Halloween that should give you a whole Saturday to get your freak on, and most importantly, don't eat so much candy that you throw up. Happy spooking!
