Groove Theory

Using music and dance as a form of meditation.

Groove Theory is one of the many playlists that I create with the sole intention of bringing forth tranquility in any and everyone who happens to listen and enjoy the journey I am taking them on. I chose this playlist because it is an eclectic collection of timeless records from some of my favorite musicians. It is vibrant, rich and appropriately delicate in its approach to evoking a trance or meditative state. Zen.

Many of us have trouble entering states of nirvana through meditation because we assume there is only one way to meditate; sitting down, legs crossed, in a room while you “OMMMMM….”. Not realizing that everything we do is and should be acknowledged as a form of meditation. Meditation is the ultimate gift because it is the process of creating stillness within your mind, body and spirit. A gift from your physical self to your spiritual self by way of allowing that part of you that is all-knowing to guide you closer and closer toward your dreams. It is ultimate presence and through meditation, we are able to attain absolute peace. My favorite form of meditation is dance. Dance is trance-evoking. It’s that “Flow State” that many mystics and yogis talk about. The space between the physical and spiritual plane. If you have seen Disney’s “Soul”, then you know what I’m referring to.

I consider myself to be a spiritual person and because of that I find meaning in any and every synchronicity the universe throws at me. Synchronicities are those little signs and symbols that affirm you and remind you that you are on the right path and you are in perfect alignment. Have you ever walked into an establishment and the song playing in the background is everything you’ve been thinking about or are you normal? When that happens to me, I instantly recognize the message the universe is trying to get across to me. Music is a beautiful way to communicate with the divine and I actually like to use music as a form of divination. I use the term divination because its original definition was “to communicate or be inspired by God.” Now it is associated more with fortune-telling and predicting the future which is understandable considering the way that dogmatic religion has impacted our personal relationship with God and the universe.

I challenge you, to try to read this piece while playing this playlist. It’ll be nearly impossible because the music is going to call you. Your soul is going to want to dance and react to these powerful frequencies. Trust me and allow me to take you on a full circle journey around the sun. Because music is such a powerful and multidimensional medium it can be used as a tool to restore your energetic frequency and when using these two mediums (music and dance) in unison one discovers a new way of embodying and experiencing pure joy.

For eons, our ancestors have used music and dance as a way to celebrate, connect with others and heal and with this playlist, I hope to continue the legacy of those that came before me. When you really look at music’s impact on your life, you’ll notice that you’ve also used music as a form of therapy. In those moments where you’ve felt completely misunderstood there was a song or an album that truly encapsulated those vast emotions you couldn’t put to words if you tried. There is nothing like it. So, if you’ve been feeling aloof and disconnected lately, or happy and grateful, this playlist is perfect for you. It’s fun, it’s groovy and it’s inspiring! So, make sure your shuffle is turned off and just push play, like a CD because this playlist is a perfect loop. Enjoy.
