
New Wave is a musical genre that came out in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It encompasses pop-orientated styles.
“Every Breath You Take” is a song that was recorded by the English rock band The Police. It is featured on their 1983 album Synchronicity. The song was written by the band’s frontman, songwriter, and bassist Sting. The song became a hit going to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles charts.
“My Sharona” is the debut single recorded by the American rock band The Knack. The song was written by Berton Averre and Doug Fieger. It is featured on their 1979 album Get the Knack. The song went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart as well as on Billboard’s 1979 Top Pop Singles Year-End chart. The RIAA certified it Gold.
“Whip It” is a song that was recorded by the American New Wave band Devo. It is featured on their 1980 album Freedom of Choice. The song is a new wave and synth-pop song. It was co-written by bassist Gerald Casale and lead vocalist Mark Mothersbaugh. Released as the second single from their album the song quickly became a hit and charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
“Call Me” is a song that was recorded by the American New Wave band Blondie. It was the theme of the 1980 movie “American Gigolo”. The lyrics were written by the band’s singer Debbie Harry. It went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart as well as on the UK Singles chart.
“Tainted Love” is a song that was composed by Ed Cobb and originally recorded by the American group The Four Preps. In 1981 the song gained worldwide fame when it was covered by the British synth-pop dip Soft Cell. After the duo performed the song on BBC “Top of the Pop” it went to number one on the UK Singles chart. In the US it became a major hit during the Second British Invasion and charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
“Cruel to Be Kind” is a song that was co-written by British singer and songwriter Nick Lowe and his former bandmate Ian Gomm. Released as a single the song charted on the US and UK charts and became one of Lowe’s best-known songs and is his only single to hit the Top 40.
“Take On Me” is a song that was recorded by the Norwegian synth-pop band A-Ha. In 1985 it became an international hit and is featured on their album Hunting High and Low. The recorded second version of this song charted on the UK Singles chart and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The video for the song won six awards.
“Let’s Dance” is a song that was recorded by the English singer and songwriter David Bowie. It is the title track of his 1983 album of the same name. The song embraces rock, funk, dance, new wave, and post-disco. It became the biggest selling single in Bowie’s career topping the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Dance/Disco charts.
“In Between Days” is a song that was recorded by the English rock band The Cure. It is featured on their 1985 album The Head on the Door. The song became an international hit and charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the UK it became their ninth charted single and their fourth consecutive Top 20 hit.
“Alison” is a song that was written and recorded by the English singer and songwriter Elvis Costello. It is featured on his 1977 debut album My Aim Is True. The song never charted but it did become one of Costello’s most famous songs.
