Cam Fairfax, Bay Area, California has started his management company “OFF TOP” and record label that handles management and releases for artists and athletes. They do full service management- meaning they handle every aspect of their client’s careers. When it comes to releasing music, they’re able to provide major label-type support while still maintaining independence and ownership of music.

Cam between Himself and as an Artist

Sometimes it’s hard to express my artistry, because my contribution to music doesn’t come in the form of my voice on records. I think that’s why I’ve started to release my own original collaborations with artists- to demonstrate how I can affect music from behind the scenes. On my last album, Waves, I made 14 records with 16 different artists. For each record, I found the beat, found writers, collaborated on the songwriting, was in every mix session, master session, everything. So when I put it out, you could really hear my influence and my touch on every record. I just want to continue to put out music and show people that you don’t necessarily need to be a singer or rapper to be an artist.

Cam’s Life Accomplishments

I really just want to keep creating music that can act as a soundtrack to people’s lives. For Waves, that entire album was inspired by the drive down the PCH. I love jumping in the car and taking that drive, and wanted to make a project that could be a soundtrack to that. I love when people tweet at me or send me videos of them driving on the coast listening to that album. I love music that becomes synonymous with specific memories- I want to keep releasing projects for all the different moments people go through in life; highs, lows, heartbreak, euphoria, all of it.

Five Years with Cam

When I think that far ahead I start to stress myself out…but a couple goals of mine are to be Billboard 40 Under 40 and to win a Grammy. Earlier this year we were nominated for a Grammy for Eric Bellinger’s New Light album in the Progressive R&B category- that was a really exciting moment for us. I think that showed us that we’re on the right path, and that we must be doing something right. So as long as I can keep doing what I love, I’ll be happy with where ever I end up 5 years from now.

What Cam Brings to the Music World

I think what I’m trying to do right now; release music as an executive producer “artist,” isn’t an easy concept to get consumers to understand. What I bring to music is the idea that you don’t need to be the best singer, best rapper, best vocalist, etc. to be an artist and to have an impact. Good music will always speak for itself, and I think I’m really good at making music that people enjoy. I would love to eventually get to a place where this executive producer role I play in my albums is understood by consumers more, and my contributions to music are looked at the same way an artist’s contributions are.

The Legacy Cam Would Leave Behind

I just want to leave behind good music. That’s all. I want my music to have an impact on people, and for people to create memories to music I make. Everyone has songs that are attached to specific memories and moments, and I hope that there are people that are making memories to the music I make. If 10 years from now, there’s a group of friends that hear my music and say, “this reminds of the time we were in high school on spring break having the time of our lives,” that would make me happy.
