Brequette could've won

Eurovision 2014

By Kayla McIntoshPublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 3 min read

I was in a random discussion with a Spanish speaker about this... I don't remember how it came about, ah yes. I heard Håll om mig in the background of a Insta reel and made me remember how fun keeping up with Eurovision was. Then the distant memory of Brequette came back to me.

For people who are of the American persuasion or just people who might not know what Eurovision is, it is a singing competition similar to American Idol and the like; Each country has their own domestic competition to determine who their representative will be, and then that representative then competes with the other representatives of the other countries until 1 winner emerges as the King/Queen of Europe, I guess.

For Spain that year, I don't remember all the competitors but they decided to go with Ruth Lorenzo and her song Dancing in the Rain

Ruth Lorenzo

I mean, if you look at her, of course she is a very classic choice, and her song is by no means bad but, I felt that it simply didn't move me as much as Brequette's voice/song did, leading me to believe that the selection wasn't really skill-based but more out of nationalism. I mean, of course, you're picking a representative for your country so, this is a factor in the decision making process, but I always wondered how far Spain would've gotten in the competition if they went with Brequette and whether or not they shot themselves in the foot with Ruth.

There along with Brequette being a black immigrant and not being of Spanish descent at all, she also had the peculiar pronunciation in her Spanish while singing which was not present in her speaking voice, which leads me to believe either her manager or someone in her PR crew guided her to be more "international" as her defining feature.

I mean, just the year after, Ariana Miyamoto was crowned Miss Japan, being the first biracial representative of Japan.

Ariana Miyamoto

If a well known homogenous, and for all intents and purposes, quite racist country such as Japan had enough leniency to allow a PoC representative for them in an international competition, why was Spain struggling to do so?

Finding more personal information is becoming hard as Meta Ai is confusing her information and is very false saying her song was called "Running Out of Time." rather than the true name " Más ".

Also apparently she could've either been born in Cape Town, South Africa or Bilbao, Spain.... how frustrating.. Anyway, I am not going to push her personal information or anything like that and leave it up to you, reader, to seek out more information at your leisure.

This is her Youtube channel which has plenty of links to her different musical activities so, feel free to explore those here

Ok, well I guess that has been my little essay on the topic. Of course this might lead you to think, "Well, what is happening in 2024 Eurovision? This is old news. "

Unfortunately, due to life and well, not having the same zest for it as much as I did in my 20's, it led me to not become such an active participant of watching the competition. Perhaps after I write this article I will take a look at these years contestants and get a bunch of new and cool music to listen to; find a new binge-worthy song to play for like 2 weeks straight and feel alive again.

Hopefully you can get the same enjoyment out of it, reader~

With that I end this post.

Have a good day~
