Add In Some Trumpets!

You're a Writer

Okay, here we go, picture it:

Something like you’d see in a picture show, a musical, something silly with live actors so that it doesn't go exactly the same as every other time.

Like cabaret, or something beatnik, you know something that starts with a good beat, like

Badum badum badum da dum dum

While someone else in the background starts beating away at cymbal with one of those whisk numbers all like

tsk tsk tsktsk tsk tsktsk tsk tsktsk tsktsk ts

The lead is just kind of talking and setting the stage. They move back and forth and use a lot of grand hand gestures and facial expressions. Clearly building something up, exciting the audience, the tension is there and then…

It’s time to make some music, but you’re not a pro.

[pause]

You’re a writer.

Just let the words flow.

ADD IN SOME TRUMPETS!

Whoa, friend, pull it right back. Enjoy the beat.

Enjoy the whole track. Let it be smooth.

Draw it on out. Rock with the mood.

It’s time to make some music, but you’re not a pro.

[pause]

You’re a writer.

Just let the words flow.

If you can write it.

You know that they’ll read it.

If they can read it.

You know that they’ll hear it.

and never forget to

ADD IN SOME TRUMPETS!

Before we whisper real low.

Music is within us, shh, our music will grow.

Violin, piano, harp, and slide whistle,

Paintbrush, ballet, pen and epistle.

ADD IN SOME TRUMPETS!

THROW IN SOME DRUM!

TAP A LITTLE TAP DANCE!

HUM A LITTLE HUM!

It’s time to make some music, but you’re not a pro.

[pause]

You’re a writer.

Just let the words flow.

Imagine all the people, singing along.

Adding in their music, adding to the song.

A chorus of various, wild, fun rumpus.

Never forget to

ADD IN SOME TRUMPETS!

Make ‘em real loud now!

ADD IN SOME TRUMPETS!

Because we’re just about done!

ADD IN SOME TRUMPETS!

One last time, this one's for fun!

ADD IN SOME TRUMPETS!

It’s time to make some music, but you’re not a pro.

[pause]

You’re a writer.

[Cut cymbals. Silence.]

[Cut spotlight. Blackout.]

AUTHORS NOTE:

I didn't think this challenge would appeal to me. I don't listen to as much music as I do audiobooks (I should diversify a little) so I barely have a reference to anything current.

Then I reminded myself that I made a vow to enter as many challenges as I can and more importantly, music is just poetry with instruments.

I asked myself: (Self) I might not be that great at instruments, but I think I might be an okay writer. Could I maybe write the music I need into a poem?

I wanted to do as best as I could to give the idea of a rhythm to allow the reader to fill in the blanks. Did you pull in a slide whistle? Maybe you went wild and had a crow caw to the beat? Did something else tickle that fancy of yours?

I hope so.

I wanted to represent the music entertwined within the written word.

I wanted add more about the reader's ability to fly their freaky weird flags in whatever medium they chose, but as I typed the poem just finished itself. I figure I don't have to say it anyway, we're gonna do what we're gonna do and we're gonna listen to what we want to listen to.

Thank you for reading.
