It had been a little more than ten years since her sudden death. I was staying at my Aunt Fumi's house. She was the wife of my mother's younger brother.

The Time-Gap Birthday
Three candles lit the spumoni ice cream cake - Lara's favorite. Cherry, pistachio, and chocolate ice cream, with yellow cake. Buttercream frosting covered the entire outer layer. The sides of the cake were adorned with roses of pink frosting. Mint green frosting trimmed the top layer. The cake was big enough for at least twenty people. Each candle on the cake was shaped like a number: 1-0-4.

Missed Connection
It was December 1986. There were no cell phones. There was no email. There was no social media. We still had landlines. Voicemail was still not a thing. It was still physical answering machines connected to the landline phone. Calling in to listen to your messages was also still in its infancy. You had to have a real expensive answering machine to have that feature. You had to wait until you got home from work, from shopping, from wherever to listen to your telephone messages.

The Volunteer Time-Traveler
The Multiverse Timecraft, my famed invention, successfully transported six mice to five minutes in the past. (Poor mice. Why do they win the lottery for being test candidates for just about anything? But I digress.) I was able to calculate the length of time the mice were transported back in time through a series of gnarly algorithms that would make the nerdiest systems engineer bawl like a newborn baby. The one snag in all this was that only four of the mice returned to the present. The remaining two were left in the past--somewhere of unknown time and space. Only my team and I knew that reverse time travel had successfully occurred. But science doesn’t rely on hearsay. It relies on evidence. Hard evidence. Reproducible results. Algorithms alone would not suffice.

It was the turn of the 32nd century and Andia Elmarri was to celebrate her 21st birthday the next day. She was a New Year’s baby by design. Her Ectogenetic Sponsor (“ES''), Ravagnaw Elmarri, had planned it that way. When he ordered the creation of an Ectogenetic Offspring (“EO”), he wanted his EO to be able to start every new year of life with a fresh start of new goals. What better day for a birthday, he thought, than the first of the year.
