Yellow Plaid and Amber Eyes
I was wearing yellow plaid velvet pants, and I rubbed my own bottom with one hand, back and forth, round and round. It was as soft as a rabbit's nose, round and round, velvet curves under my fingers. Snapping myself out of my personal revelry, the sound of music came crashing back into my consciousness. The band played well, as if they’d been playing together for decades. Which I assumed they had, as each of them with their brass and their strings looked older than my Grandma Anne. I watched them play for a moment, my hand straying back to the velvet curves again.

Destiny and Mollusks
She tapped on the glass. Gently, but firmly. Nothing happened. She tapped again, a bit more firmly. A woman behind her said “no tapping on the glass!”. Turning to sneer at the woman, she tapped again. This time, it was more like knocking on a door. Loud and abrupt. The woman shook her head in disgust and walked briskly away, she muttered as she went. “Some people’s children, such a shame”. The young lady raised her fist to the glass wall of the aquarium tank and stared longingly into the teal water. She leaned forward, and rested her forehead against the tempered glass. Sighing, she felt the great well of despair rise up inside her again.

The Owl and the Druid Myth
A barn owl is a ghost, a spirit, a soul within a wingspan. They are harbingers of the spirit world, and carry myth and magic with them in almost every culture. A barn owl is exactly what she wished she could be. Free, and wild, with a heart shaped face. Eyes that could track their prey across the night, the same as they could find their lover in flight. Being human was overrated.

Mrs Mia Wallace
She was nineteen years old when she finally left this earth. By my side her entire life, and I was forty one at the time of her passing. That meant nearly half my life, I had Mrs Mia Wallace next to me. This was a blessing like no other I have ever experienced in my lifetime thus far. When we first got her, she was so small she could fit in my jacket zipped up. We wondered why we got such a small dog, we were normally ‘Big Dog People’, if you know what I mean. She was my girl, it was my decision to get a dog, we were young and married too young. He didn’t want anything to do with her, that is, until he saw what a bright light she was. Once you saw Mia, you couldn’t ever turn away from her light. This little dog saved my life, more than once, that much is certain.

The Owl
Running through the doorway as excited as the dog, he barks at me, “I found an owl!” Now, I thought to myself, maybe he just means the owl we saw drinking water off the patio the other day, maybe it had come back. I look out the window to see if our striped friend is sitting out front, but alas, I see nothing. The ink black night offers nothing visual. He stamps his foot like a little kid, and demands I get ready to brave the fridgid cold with him and the dog.
