When Hu’osh asked why she wasn’t called for during her wounded father’s last breaths, no one had anything to say. Even the proper elders, who muttered sacred names, bestowed by the earth itself, had only vacant stares to offer. As if the last of their voice was used up when they muttered into the ground so that it could swallow her father’s corpse whole. Their silences melded so that Hu’osh, too, was swallowed by languor.

Sacred Glitch
Aboard the space-faring Evermore, Lapis stole away in a hygiene closet. She cradled her AI microcluster cube long enough to precipitate. Wiping on her pants, she carefully circumvented vital, swarming cables. Her pixelated visor screen, too few millimeters away from her eyes, taunted her with confounding code.

Ethical Consumption
Jenny was onto Corey, her boyfriend. She didn’t know what it was that he was hiding, but certainly, he was hiding something. Though she was cooking, dinner was the last thing on her mind. She stirred the tofu scramble before adding a finishing touch: two dashes of turmeric. A few more stirs, and it was mixed. She made sure its bright golden yellow spread evenly through the food.

Deliverance
As the airplane ascended into the cloudy skies, Sarah was furious. Furious with the airline staff who had forced her to change clothes. All because some obviously racist coward had found her Black Lives Matter shirt to be offensive. Somehow, this was enough for her to be approached by Karen, the stewardess, who asked her to remove it because, supposedly, someone saw and found it offensive. That was more than enough to set Sarah off, surely, and she would’ve put Karen, and her offended dolt-in-distress, whomever they were, in their place, had it not been for the dizzying sucker punch that came in the form of her own mother agreeing with Karen the stewardess and insisting that Sarah obey.
