The School Boards in Trump Country
I have been spending time in Trump Country for a bit over a year. I made it my permanent residence in July, and generally speaking is like most other places, as long as you avoid controversial subjects. I wrote about my experiences after the 2020 election. While the current trade war between Donald Trump and China keeps making the news. There’s another trade war guided by Thomas Jefferson we never heard about. That one led to protectionist pricing and massive exportation of what became Virginia’s greatest export, not tobacco but slaves.

Slave Deaths History Doesn't Talk About
There is a story told about Ella Sheppard, the matriarch of the Fisk University Jubilee Singers, where her mother, distraught that her owner wouldn’t allow Ella to be sold to her father; was ready to drown 3-year-old Ella that she might know freedom of another kind. In some stories, it was “Mammy Vinny” who cried out and stopped Sarah from killing her child; in another version, “Aunt Cherry” intervened, saying; “God’s got great work for this baby to do. She’s going to stand before Kings and Queens.”

America's Breeding Farms: What History Books Never Told You
In 1808, America banned the import of slaves from Africa and the West Indies. The impact on actual slavery in America was almost non-existent. There was still some limited smuggling of slaves but the majority of new slaves in America came from what Professor Eric Foner called, “natural increase.” One could reasonably ask, “Why ban slave imports and not slavery itself?” The answer is because, for many of the proponents of the prohibition including Thomas Jefferson, the reason was not based on humanitarian concerns but on economics. The South was producing and selling enough slaves internally that the slave trade was reducing prices for slaves and cutting into profits.

Letter From the Democratic Plantation
I argue on the Internet with what I'll lump together and call Republicans. Most of them are indeed registered Republicans although some prefer only to be called Conservative or Libertarian. As far as I know, I'm the only black regular among the group but being the Internet, you can't say for sure.

With Lives at Stake, The President and His Cronies Can't Stop Lying
The Coronavirus (also know as Corvid-19) has reached the United States. As of Feb 26th, it has yet to be declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) but there is little doubt that day is near. It is near impossible to get accurate information about the virus because most governments involved, particularly our own can't stop lying to us about the disease. Coronavirus originated in China and has since spread to every continent except Antarctica.

Will Black Voters Save Joe Biden's Presidential Campaign?
Joe Biden's hopes to become President were always dependent on his ability to capture a high percentage of the black vote. With the earliest contests in the Democratic Primary process taking place in Iowa and New Hampshire with minimal black presence and the recent Nevada caucus where black voters are heavily outweighed by whites and Hispanic voters. The February 29th South Carolina Primary will be the first opportunity to see if black voters will be the firewall Biden desperately needs to stay a factor in the race to become the Democratic nominee. Bernie Sanders has taken a commanding lead in the race percentage wise, although the states having input thus far only represent 2% of the delegates to be awarded. Three days after South Carolina comes Super Tuesday; if Biden can't slow down Sander's momentum, he may well be finished by next week, unless black voters rush in to save the day.

Book Review: “Resilient Walker” by Dr. Shree Walker
My reading schedule is pretty full and I had no plans to allow Dr. Shree Walker’s memoir to jump the line ahead of others I needed to read for research. A few unlikely things occurred that put her book in the front of the rotation and I’m glad they did.
