Getting back into a gym routine after quarantine
Unless you are lucky enough to have a home gym (like me) or access to some kind of equipment, you might be one of the millions of people whose gym routine came to an abrupt halt in the early spring. Everyone with a fitness routine was forced to find some way to adapt. For some people, it meant buying their own equipment. In early April, online fitness equipment sales jumped 55%. Equipment could be purchased in the early stages of the shutdown, but eventually it became hard to come by. Rogue Fitness, one of the most popular fitness brands, transitioned their factory to make PPE in March and has been out of stock of most equipment like barbells, resistance bands and more since. Even as sporting goods stores reopened, fitness equipment was still difficult to find.

Mental Fitness
I started meditating at 21 years old in the summer of 2017. I might have tried it once or twice before, but I really didn’t know anything about it other than that monks did it in movies. While at Pitt, every month or so, we would have team building meetings (shout out Penny, Dr. Conte and Lusaka). This is where I first meditated for real. A timer would be set for 2 minutes and we were instructed to sit upright, eyes closed and just watch the thoughts as they passed through your mind. The potential benefits were increased focus, better decision-making, less dwelling on mistakes, all things that would give anyone an edge while playing a sport at a high level. To be honest, I was interested in it, but it didn’t really stick.

All Talk, No Action
One of my biggest pet peeves is when people say things they don’t mean. And I don’t mean a change of opinion. When presented with new information, you should be able to change your opinion. What I’m referring to is when someone says they are going to do something, and it never happens. Of course, at the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter to me. But think about it, if you know someone who is always just saying things and their actions don’t line up with whatever they are saying, you’re going to think they are pretty unreliable right?

Final Four (Part 3 of 4)
When I decided to write about this whole experience, I did not intend for it to be made up of multiple parts. But once I started, I realized that there was a lot more to write about than I originally thought. And still, I’ve left a lot out. Looking back to what was technically the second round (first round for us) of the national tournament against Notre Dame College, I remember the general vibe was “great we get an extra game”. As I mentioned before, the conference championship was our big goal that season and after coming up short, it almost felt like our season ended there. But it didn’t.

Final Four (Part 2 of 4)
I learned a lot in my four years of soccer at the University of Pittsburgh. My soccer IQ increased drastically in my last 2 and a half years. Thinking back on it now, it’s absolutely insane that I got to play for a coaching staff of that caliber. I was recruited by mostly Division III schools in high school. I didn’t play for a very high-level club. The high school I went to was not on the map for soccer, at least not since the 90s. I got to Pitt mostly because, like my year at West Chester, things just seemed to fall into place.

Final Four (Part 1 of 4)
Highmark Stadium sits in the shadow of Mt. Washington on the south shore of the Monongahela River. Built in 2012 on the same ground that used to house the Chevrolet Amphitheatre, Highmark Stadium became the new home of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. It gave soccer a presence in Pittsburgh. I first stepped foot into Highmark Stadium some time in 2013. I started training there as a part of the Riverhounds Goalkeeper Academy. It was difficult to find consistent and quality technical goalkeeper training in the Pittsburgh area back then and the club I played for didn’t offer consistent goalkeeper training. I remember thinking about how cool it was that I got to train on that field.
