Once in bed, Kendal Thornhill brought a slim volume of the latest bodice ripper and a small gas lamp with her to the bedchamber. Her small flat didn’t have a gas line, except for the bedroom. Yet, to get there, she had to use the small handlamp to navigate. Without money from Liam’s death, this was the best she could afford. As she moved, her eyes touched on the various wards throughout her flat to keep out the malevolent spirits that would try and disturb her slumber.
