Dog Gone Days
A few years ago, my then-girlfriend and I were on the precipice of making a significant decision that would alter the fate of our lives. We were determining whether we could adopt two miniature dachshund/chihuahua puppies. Our deliberations were short. In the end, we went to the immediately gratifying option of adopting the two young puppies and throwing ourselves into the wildly complicated world of being puppy parents. We were both inexperienced in taking care of dogs. Still, we each had experience taking care of cats, so we figured we would get the hang of the whole puppy parent thing quickly. And so we entered into the new world with Brass, the miniature dachshund puppy, and Monkey, the chihuahua puppy.

Days Gone By
The morning sun pours down from the cloudless sky onto the town below. It's the perfect time in the morning, right as young kids are stirring up from their slumberous states and adults are beginning to need their second cup of coffee. Two single parents meet up right outside a coffee shop they both like to frequent. They would talk about getting together for a kid's playdate for ages but today is the day it finally happens. The parents, each walking hand-in-hand with a child, share the sidewalk. The parents are on the outside with their children in the middle. The children are exceedingly nervous being brought along to meet strangers who they know nothing about. The parents chat happily away as they semi-drag their children along with them to the destination of the afternoon: the town park.

Dark Pool
Who gets scared by this crap? A young man, Dan, and his group of friends participate in an annual horror event at any number of popular theme parks. The one they are attending now, known as “Frightening Foray,” is the most popular event of this kind around. These events feel a little tired and played out to Dan. There are a select number of ‘lands’ that are featured in this theme park every year. Each ‘land’ features a different horror genre classic. The issue is that every Land, every year, plays out almost identically.

Spidey-Daddy
Like a fair number of late high school early-college age kids, my friends and I decided to engage in a night of hooping, hollering, and all kinds of admittedly stupid antics. I think back on both fondly and with high levels of cringe. The challenges started while we were driving home from the beach one day, and my friend, who we’ll call Gregor, declared we would be playing a game of truth and dare during the car ride home. The group consisted of me, “Gregor,” “Katie,” “Darrin,” and “Kyle.” We were almost home. Maybe it was to keep everyone awake and alert as we made the early-evening drive back home.

The World of RWBY
The world of Remnant. It is a fantasy world that many who will read this are probably unfamiliar with from the hit online series RWBY. The world of RWBY is fascinating for many reasons extending from the work itself and even outside the narrative. It was a world crafted from a dream and a few coincidental moments experienced by the series' late creator Monty Oum. This series left a deep impression on me when I first discovered it online five years ago. When you break it all down, it's not hard to see why this series and this world has a vibe that is in sync with so many. This series is very near and dear to my heart. It is one I would cite as my favorite series and indeed my favorite fantasy series of all time.

The Long Flight
Jason Hoot flies gracelessly through the sky, bruises adorn every non-covered part of his body, his clothes are raggedy. Dried blood has them sticking uncomfortably to his body. His large hawk-like wings jutting out of his back are ruffled and bent oddly as well. Through sheer force of will, Jason has been staying airborne to get away from his pursuers.

Child of The Water
Bam. Bam. Bam. A harsh pounding resounds from underneath a frozen lake's surface. The sound of someone's hand slamming as hard as it can against the ice that's taken hold of the lake. Underneath the icy sheet is Nerissa, a child of the Delphinin people who are water-faring people. The Delphinin people can exist in both salt and freshwater. Given this flexibility, they have made a home in many of Earth's water sources: oceans, swamps, rivers, lakes, etc. Nerissa had been asleep in the depths of Lake Superior. When she awoke, the surface was covered with a thick layer of ice reaching down, from her rough approximation, a foot and a half.

Lucky
"What was that you said before, love? 'Let's take the train, dear. We shouldn't strain you much more than we already have.' Something like that?" snarked a short woman with long, golden-haired as she raises her steel tonfas up to protect herself from a massive white talon. The muscles on her arms bulge as she guards against the impact.

Winter in July
The morning sun blazes high in the sky. Autumn Ali-Summers and her wife Kayra Ali-Summers are sleeping peacefully in their unconventional bed. Their bed consists of an old pickup truck with hay and blankets spread along the truck bed. As the sun continues to rise, light peers through some of the holes in the old barn wall. The light shines in Autumn's eyes which wakes her up just enough to convince her to move around in their makeshift bed. The couple's dog, a dachshund, named Pumpkin takes this as her cue to get up for the day. She hops off the bed of the truck and exits through the broken barn doors.

Memories
The year is 20xx. Two decades after a cataclysmic event caused by one of the world's most trusted heroes. Solstice, the master of flame and frost, lost control over her unparalleled power of fire and ice and sent the world as a whole into an ecological disaster. The sudden, planet-wide flash freezes and flash fires caused the immediate collapse of the global order. They killed a lowball estimate of 90% of the world's population within 24 hours. In the years that followed, the Solstice Pulses, as they came to be known, were less intense, but they could change from walls of fire to subzero, icy wind, and vice versa at a moment's notice.
