17. Olivia blinked, rubbed her eyes, blinking again. How? Why? What? The fires and explosions lit up the sky. She felt heat from each explosion that sent debris and people flying from the open cannon decks. The Amun-Airen suffered catastrophic failure, forcing Olivia and her followers to run for cover. It groaned as it broke apart. Its bow listed port-side slamming into the spire.

She glared like she saw right through him. Long, dark dread hung from his cheeks, down to his stomach. Dark black skin, his greying beard covered most of his face. But his cold eyes, visible, stared back at the couple.

Her mouth didn’t move, but she spoke. Her words bypassed his ears.

An awkward pause. He wrote her order down, two pumps of vanilla, four shots of espresso over ice, before she could order. He remembered, she thought as her mind raced with assumptions.

Zuveans threw people into cells with only a bucket and hardtack bread. The Kushites fed them three times a day. The room had a bath and shower, fully stocked. Iulia took a bath the first night. He’d never seen her so relaxed.
