Tomorrow sees the release of Secret Empire #1, and with it the beginning of the end to what may well be the most controversial story in Marvel Comics' 60-year history. Last year, Nick Spencer's Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 shocked the world as it closed with a startling revelation - that #CaptainAmerica, Steve Rogers himself, was an agent of Hydra! Secret Empire brings that story to a close, and Marvel's just issued a statement asking fans to bear with them - and judge the arc when it's complete, not when it's still unfinished.

Doctor Who is a unique sci-fi series, with the ability to change the show's lead at the drop of a hat. As a result, pretty much every fan has their favorite version of the Doctor — and it's usually the first one that introduced them to the series. For Stephen King fans, the name Firestarter is charged. King was already famous in 1980, due to the success of novels like The Shining and The Dead Zone, then he introduced fans to another classic, Firestarter. To give you an idea of how well the novel was received, by 1981 the book had been nominated for the British Fantasy Award, the Locus Poll Award, and the Balrog Award. By 1984, Firestarter had been turned into a film... one that Stephen King himself considers one of the worst adaptations from his books.

For many decades, comic books were often considered to be a 'male hobby', and as a result, the classic female superheroes have often been little more than eye-candy. Over the last decade or so, though, that's changed; comics have begun to take female characters more seriously than ever before, and as a result they've gained a lot in terms of female readership too. Although it's hard to get an accurate grasp on the comics market as a whole, one site — Graphic Policy — has been conducting monthly reviews of fans who list 'comic books' among their Facebook likes. They've routinely found that about 47% of self-identifying comic book fans are female.
