The First Move
Like most kids I went through school with my friends from childhood. Preschool then kindergarten and so on until I graduated from high school. My parents went to our local church and since they were regulars they built relationships with other church goers who also had kids. Those kids at least most of them would attend my preschool which is now another church, go figure. We had to wear uniforms at this school everyday, and on Wednesday we got even more dressed up putting on ties and sweater vests. Although it was a charter school I remember the children still being normal. Most of our parents were in the middle class so, they were shelling out extra money for our education, but because of that we were raised strictly. The money they were shelling out put our families in the hole and they made sure we knew it. Constantly pushing us beyond our limits holding their unreachable expectations above our heads. It refined us, but also made us stubborn as we were all put into a group in which we were supposed to be the best. During this time I found out who my best friend for the entirety of my life would be. Before I knew his name both he and I requested to use the restroom. We finished, but a child’s curiosity knows no bounds and we dared each other into the girls bathroom. Well, unfortunately we didn’t plan on there being girls in there and even more unfortunate than that we didn’t understand girls in the slightest. We just wanted to know why it smelled good and why there were no urinals; they wanted to know why we were there, and instead of asking us they all became banshees. We ran for our lives and made it back to class, but the girls were hot on our tails telling everyone what had just happened. We got suspended that day (for a couple days), but when we got back we were best friends.

Be Great
Assume everyone in the world wants to be great, and that everyone in the world would do anything to achieve some sort of greatness; what would be the first thing holding them back? The place they were raised, how much money they were “born” with, or just the color of their skin are all good answers as a first obstacle, but they wouldn’t be the very first one. Before any written exam or physical competition there has to be an increase in knowledge or physical attributes. This is what I would call the preparation phase. After the practice is complete the person now has to go into their specific trials whether that be a chess tournament or a friendly race down the street. This is what I would call the acquire phase. The “final form” of this person has now been achieved and they are ready to have an okay to good performance. However, this is when the first obstacle will reveal itself clearly. Sometimes a good performance doesn’t get it done and a lot of people don’t understand that. The first obstacle to overcome for anyone who wants to be great isn’t the training, or even finding something to be great at, that part is easy. The first obstacle is to overcome losing, or failing after the first time when the training was as thorough as possible. Knowing that there wasn’t anything else that could have been done, and the only option is to get right back to it.

Forced Adulthood
When I was a child I always wanted to be a grown up. It seemed more fun than being a child; there were so many adventures that my cousins, and older sister were allowed to partake in that I wasn’t. My sisters to me were something of legend anyway since they left the house so early, but I was told of their glory days by my parents as if they still lived with us. They were allowed to go out and stay out until the crack of dawn, and come home with metal in their skin with seemingly no punishment. To me, it was all I ever hoped for in the future. To be able to do anything I wanted without having a consequence immediately follow was all I could dream about as a child.
