Letters to My Son
You may have noticed—as my mother certainly did—that I haven't kept up my end of the bargain with the daily updates. Although I understand my mother's frustration with my writing pace, I only recently had the correct address to send mail, so I didn't see the point in building up more of a stockpile. I had no news, no way to contact you, and only so much desire to process your absence "out loud" once I noticed that far more people read these posts than our immediate family (yes, I know that's the entire point). It was only then that I realized that these open letters were as much for her—and others—as they are for you.

Letters to My Son Day 4. Wait, I mean 5.
I am sitting in the backyard in the hammock trying out the new typewriter feature on my Remarkable tablet. The sun is warm, and the cats are content to survey their domain from a patch of it nearby. This has become my favorite time of day recently and having the ability to write like this helps my motivation.

Letters to My Son Day 5
PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS ACTUALLY DAY 4. Not quite sure how to edit the title. Sorry for the confusion. It occurred to me that you probably have no idea what a typical day would be like for me. I was struck by that bit of insight after realizing how little I knew of your day-to-day activities. We might grumble greetings at each other in the morning, or catch the latest episode of "Chainsaw Man" on HULU together, but aside from an occasional family movie or game night that we could successfully bribe both you and your sister with top shelf snacks to participate in, we were already leading very separate lives without me even noticing. Which is as it should be—it's how life works, after all—but it still snuck up on me all the same.

Letters to My Son Day 3
I've heard it said that writing is a muscle, and exercise is key to success. As it happens, I'm pretty terrible at settling into a physical exercise routine, too. Be that as it may, today is a new day, and it's not the fall that's important, it's the recovery. So I'm trying to figure out a schedule that I'll naturally follow and then inserting "triggers" to Pavlov myself into being a better me. For example, I always take my blood pressure pill in the morning with my coffee because I NEVER forget coffee. I've done that long enough now that the very act of caffeinating myself in the morning also reminds me to take my pill.

PART ONE This is what your dad looked like this morning when you called. You called! Slightly off-topic, but I've decided that since I was the first person you contacted when offered your precious allotment of ten minutes of phone time, I am the one you love the most. I will accept no other explanation.

Letters to my Son: Day One
I'm seated at the desk in your room. Your dad is on a work call and I can hear him clearly through the shared wall. There is more light in your room than you'd like: I pulled back the blackout curtains and opened the blinds to let in the morning sun. Soon, there will be a warm bit of sunlight on your bed for basking, which I expect a certain six pound cat to find in about 30 minutes. The fat one has his own cozy blanket for basking in the sunlight of your dad's love on his desk. I occasionally hear them arguing about the leisurely pace 'Biggie Smalls' chooses while traversing the "productivity zone" to get to it.
