Born as a military brat, Tara had lived and visited the four corners of the U.S. Having experienced trauma growing up, Tara found her love of wiring as a wonderful outlet to share her experiences with others. Tara currently resides in the Midwest and still enjoys writing in her free time.

Chapter 1: The Creature From Beyond
“Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. So, scream away my dear, feel the hurt and anger, and scream away. Your body will start to freeze and your arms will no longer wave”. Her golden eyes looked with excitement and her blue lips grinning like the Cheshire cat. A terrified young woman had a look of pure terror and panic on her face but was unable to change her untimely fate. Her long brown hair floated around her face as she closed her eyes and opened her mouth to scream. A loud, shrill voice came through, at least in her head that is what it sounded like. From afar there was just silence. Nothing heard or seen, nothing at all.

The Train to Nowhere
Tick, tick, tick… the sound of stopwatch became deafening in the silence. Arya opened her eyes waking from a wonderful dream. She looked across her where in a gentleman in a clean three-piece suit was reading a newspaper. He seemed engrossed in whatever he was reading. The headline of the paper read: The Future is Here!! The gentleman didn’t seem to notice she was awake only stopping every few minutes or so looking at his stopwatch anxiously. Arya started to think of her dream she just had thinking of how grand it would be if the dream were real. She dreamt of flying in the sky like a superhero and falling onto an island that seemed to be surreal. It seemed untouched by the human population and had rock formations in the water. She began to swim to the arched rock formation in the water and felt the magic of the place surrounding her. Below the arch of the rock formation was flat land and as she pulled herself up to the land mass she noticed a beautifully placed table set for one person. There was a place setting with food she had never seen before and the silver looked like it was brand new. As she sat down to eat this glorious meal, everything went black and she awoke in this strange cabin sitting across from this gentleman she had never met before. As Arya came to full consciousness and looked out the window of her cabin she was jolted back to reality. She was on a train…a train going somewhere that she had no recollection of. In fact, how did she wind up here?

Mikaila Ulmer's Story
When I saw this challenge, I was super excited because I love the idea of celebrating women of color and providing information about the success stories over the years. When searching for one in particular I wanted to find one that was more modern. Don’t get me wrong, you should learn historical figures and that is always important, but I feel that is everyone’s “go to” when you go through Black History Month. Well, no offense, but you don’t have to go that far back to learn about successful, innovative black women! In fact, in my search I found tons of articles with hundreds of women that are successful with businesses right here, right now in 2021. They should be celebrated and talked about because guess what? You could be supportive of their business endeavors versus just talking about the invention created 50 years ago etc.

Dorian's Story
One early summer morning (2007) in sunny California, a 32-year-old man could be found sitting in front of his computer profusely sweating as he had not moved since 8:00 pm the previous night. When you are in a bind financially and have a family to support, sleeping is not an option. His parents always worked so hard and never let him forget that. They moved to America before he was born and provided everything he ever needed, but it was not without consequence. Because his parents were so successful, they expected nothing less from their only son. Dorian had above average intelligence, but he also had what the doctor’s call ADHD. The “H” stood for hypo rather than hyper. With this, Dorian felt there was a shadow that hovered over him throughout his life and it followed him well into adulthood. He had the intelligence but there was no motivation to drive him to the success his parents expected of him.

No Longer Young and Dumb (Sort of)
When I was 17 I found my very first true love. He could do no wrong until everything he did had a huge red flag surrounding him. He became abusive emotionally and physically. When you look up the word toxic you will probably find a picture of us. After escaping with just the shirt on my back, I didn't feel normal until YEARS later. Many have gone through this story unfortunately, but if you haven’t but have just had your heart utterly and completely broken, I will provide to you the ultimate heart break playlist.

Ah yes, the Midwest! Currently -6 and we aren’t even close to done with winter. Yikes. Not the best-selling point admittedly for my hometown. Funnily enough, I wasn’t born here and haven’t spent the majority of my life here. Yet I call this my hometown because I plan to make my life here. I even encouraged my mother to move here so she could eventually be close to her grandchildren (whenever that day comes). I spent 15 years down south so moving to the Midwest was shock, especially the winters. For the first few years many made fun and poked at me for whining about how cold it is here. Of course, in the summertime I would poke fun at my Midwest friends for complaining about the heat. What I can tell you is that this place does have some friendly folks once you get to know them. Despite popular belief it does actually warm up in the spring and summer. It can actually get humidity comparable to the south and then some. Many come out to play in the summer and you will be hard pressed to find anyone really staying indoors on a Saturday night. Yes, they love their bars just as much as anyone else! We live an hour and a half away from the twin cities. You can travel to the Mall of America one weekend day and enjoy a concert at Target Field. For those who love baseball, you will find they love the Minnesota Twins.

Her Last Breath
Her Last Breath Fire and smoke filled the air as the buildings that once inhabited a small town fell to their own demise. Screams could be heard from miles away, and frantic hoofbeats were heard going far, far away from the town that once was. Nearby on a cliff, a woman sat near the edge with her knees to her chest and her head facing straight forward watching the terror that unfolded. Her green eyes were so still one might have thought she was a statue. Her curly dark brown hair waved back and forth as if it were saying goodbye to all that was. Try as she might, she couldn’t leave this spot even if she wanted. Frozen and numb she sat there for hours until the last flame was suffocated, and the last bit of night touched the sky. Once she realized there was nothing to go back to, she stood to her feet and walked away.
