The Story of Violet
Her name was Violet Kawaikoeahiokekuahiwi Wong Hoe and she was my father’s mother. Born in 1900 to a full-blood Hawaiian woman and a Chinese laborer who came to Hawaii to work on a sugar plantation, Grandma was the most influential person in my life. She taught me what it meant to be Hawaiian. More importantly, a Hawaiian woman.

The Lamps
I never saw Joanna move into her unit in our townhouse development. But from my kitchen sink, I could look out the window and see her fenced backyard crammed full of boxes, crates and garbage cans. The reason I could see the clutter and trash in her yard was because it was piled far above the six-foot fence, and was stacked up to the eight-foot height under the patio awning. It truly was an eyesore.

Hilo, My Hometown
Everyone needs a hometown. That nest full of familiar places where you know the shortcuts to get somewhere fast, even if it means trespassing or jumping a couple of fences. The place where there are people who knew your parents before they met. Where you can close your eyes and recall the sights and sounds of your best memories, and where your children and grandchildren wish they lived now even though they have high-paying jobs and big houses somewhere else.
