"Challengers" Movie Review
Challengers is a triumphantly sexy cinematic rollercoaster ride, too incredulously fun not to watch. Tashi Duncan is played by Zendaya, the exceptionally emotive young movie star. Matched against her are two gorgeously nerdy-looking young players, Mike Faist as Art Donaldson and Josh O’Conner as Patrick Zweig. All three have the blessing of great chemistry whenever they spar across screen. Alongside their star qualities are bouncing timelines, demonstrating a lifetime of flagrantly competitive choices that create a trail of wasted potential and misguided lust. Director Luca Guadagnino really knows how to make a graceful yet scandalous picture. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross's EDM score intensifies the thrill of tennis and prideful characters up to an eleven. After watching Challengers multiple times, I am forced to argue that all sporting events should henceforth take place at a fist-pumping rave. When first hearing about this movie, I thought the entire plot had been offered up within the two-minute trailer. Two friends like a tennis star. Tennis star has a career-ending injury. Tennis star picks blonde boy, and brunette boy is angry. Audience members think they have digested the full ingredients of the film before getting their soles sticky from the theatre floor. Yet, this new-age masterpiece is anything but a simple meal.

“This doesn’t look right,” Fuck me, I got to get out of here, the bands are about to start. Ok, last change, last chance. Does this black tube top look better than this black crop top? Turn left, turn right. Jesus, all my outfits are virtually identical. No need for an existential fashion crisis right now. Ok, full body shake, pull it together. Chill out and take another sip, now twirl. “I’m fucking hot, who cares!” Those affirmations are doing me well. This outfit sends the right message. Moving into hair. Brush, brush the short coils on my dome. Slick it back forming the crown of waves. This is good, don’t touch it. Now which silver jewels will frame my cheeks? Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, let's go with the big o-ring chain and the dangle knives. Don’t want to appear too approachable. That’s lovely, leave it there freak. Now looking back at the full fit, looks good from this angle, that angle is nice too. Five more squats for good measure. Ignore those crunchy tin man knees, nightfall awaits. Shit, almost forgot the shoes. Clunking around in these platforms is going to be a mistake. Who do I think I am wearing devil horns on my feet? Only Satan’s side chick would do some shit like that. Well ya know, the devil is alright. He hits me up on full moons. We dance and argue naked. When he leaves he says he’ll see that pussy soon. I pretend not to hold my breath. Living cannot be felt without sin. Maybe Satan can help keep my ankles unbroken. Oh, there goes my phone. Wow, Moni is bailing,

Ashtray
I threw out what was in that ashtray today. I was saving the half-smoked spliffs in case you came back to my bed. Can't wait any longer. Can't get high on what you left behind. The memories are too sobering. With lids closed, I still see you with your hand in mine, for a moment you squeezed so tight. Looking around…it's hard to tell you were ever here. Your green eyes turned icy that last day.

Ode to our fuckery.
I miss my friends. There was once a crew that mobbed around neighborhoods like fearless cats. Hiding from cop cars under dim streetlamps and playground slides. On a mission to go nowhere fast, we shared smokes and long-necked bottles. We laughed into the moon until we were demanded back to our beds. Dusty sidewalks cratered with our footprints, we grazed back and forth from park to parking lot. Days we were “going to the movies” we spent giggling with florescent vodka stuck to our smiles. “Can I get 10 bucks for the movies mom” “Yeah, okay. What are you guys seeing?” “It’s a scary one, you wouldn’t like it.”
