Fluidity in Fashion
Long gone are the days of "You can't wear that, it's for girls." As society is becoming more open and accepting as a whole, the lines of feminine and masculine become more and more blurred. More and more people are questioning why it's acceptable for women to wear men's clothing, but not the other way around. Is it possible to erase the gender identity society bestowed on clothing?

90's Fashion Trends We Still Love. Top Story - August 2020.
The 90's had something for everyone. It was a time where, on a global scale, the trends were all over the place. You had Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love leading the grunge revolution, Cher Horowitz and Rachel Green inspiring the next generation of luxury designer lovers, pop stars literally wearing whatever they wanted; it was a truly magical time for fashion. So many of the trends that were popular then have made a strong comeback and some have managed to stay popular since the 90's. These are the best of the best.

Diet Coke and Cigarettes
Just the smell of this place is enough to make me nauseous. It just smells deep fried. The kind of place you walk into and immediately feel the need to wash your face. I made my way to the bathroom eyeing everyone’s food, telling myself I’m not hungry. I’ve survived the last four days on Diet Coke, gum, and Camel lights. One bite of greasy diner food would undo all that work I’ve done. One fry will inevitably lead to a whole plate which leads to a burger and, next thing you know, I’ll have ordered two large pizzas to whatever roadside motel I make home for the night. No. Head down. Bathroom. Leave.

Corner Booth
I was having a heated discussion with my mom. It was all in my head, but I was getting my thought out regardless. I’ve started having these conversations with myself instead of with her, not because I was afraid of these conversations with her, but because I knew how they would end. In my head, I get a tearful apology and changed actions that confirmed that apology. In reality, however, it would end in a fight. I would plead my case, she would insist she’s doing absolutely nothing wrong with that tone that takes me back to her middle naming me when I was in trouble when I was young. Her brow would furrow and I would retaliate in that booming voice that frightened my brother when he was little. We wouldn’t surrender until the other walked away and then we wouldn’t speak without harsh tones for days. Eventually, sweeping the issue under the rug to fester and never again see the light of day. This is how every confrontation with my mother has gone for as long as I can remember, and I don’t have it in me to fight right now. So, I play both parts and say each line over and over until I get the result I feel I deserve. Just another item to add to the list of things I need to talk about in therapy.

Let’s talk about periods!
How often do you think about how much waste is made when you're on your period? If you use traditional pads and tampons, it's quite a bit. In their lifetime, tampon users will use and dispose of, on average, 11,000 tampons. Each year, around 12 billion pads and 7 billion tampons end up in landfills. Not to mention the tampons that are flushed and go through the water system. So what are the alternatives? Well, my fellow period-havers, there are so many more sustainable options out there. Here are just a few.

With a Gracious Soul and a Heart Full of Love
Finding peace in the busy world can be a difficult thing. Finding the time to access the peace you can find can be tricky. Just ten minutes a day of mindfulness can make all the difference. If you are not the type to sit in silence and connect to the mind, walking meditation might be for you. Walking meditation can help you feel more grounded and balanced while allowing you to establish an awareness of your body, thoughts, and surroundings. For this meditation, find a pathway you enjoy and feel comfortable walking. Allow yourself to be in the moment along the way and open your mind and find comfort within yourself.

Spice Up Your Teen Spirit
It’s 1998, I’m four years old sitting in the back seat of my dad’s Jeep Cherokee singing ‘Big Empty’ by Stone Temple Pilots at the top of my lungs. I lovingly referred to this as ‘the da song’ because, of course, four year old me made up my own lyrics and before Scott Weiland would break into the chorus (“Time to take her home her dizzy head is conscious laden”) I would scream ‘DAAA’. Normally, a four year old singing along to a song that the singer has said is “about f—cking in the backseat of your car” would seem odd; but, to this day, it’s one of my dad’s favorite memories.

America’s Two Party System
With 2020 being an election year, it seems pertinent to continue to inform ourselves on the history of our government and ways we may be able to improve. With the current state of our country, and the world, this election seems more important than those in the past; but also more chaotic and emotional. More and more I notice people saying they will not vote, they are begrudgingly voting for the candidate they did not want, or are “throwing their vote away” and voting for a third party candidate. While the majority of the country grows more divided, I thought we should take a look at how America became a two party system and what potential we have at becoming more than Democrats and Republicans.

The Olsen Legacy
Growing up in the 90's, Mary-Kate and Ashley were the ultimate idols for tweens and teens. I had everything they sold from movies to games to dolls to clothes; if it was Mary-Kate and Ashley related, I wanted it. They’ve already left their mark on the world and continue to succeed and inspire people globally. Now in their 30’s, the notoriously private twins have created an empire from the ground up that very few can rival.

I Sold Clothes on Depop For 30 Days. Top Story - July 2020.
A month ago, my sister introduced me to the world of online thrift shopping. She had become obsessed with live auctions on Instagram and would go on and on about how much these people were making off such a small investment. It had me wondering how long did it take for these people to make a career out of selling thrifted clothing online. Some of them make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. And while that is extremely few and far between, many others have made this their main (or only) income source. So, with a $40 investment at Goodwill and a trash bag of old clothes, I decided to give it a shot. I am by no means an Instagram live auctioneer and have already tried my hand on Etsy a time or two, so Depop seemed to be the obvious route.

How Sustainable are Your Fashion Choices?. Top Story - July 2020.
When you're looking for a new outfit, where is the first place you want to shop? Is is a thrift store? Your favorite local designer? That online store that sells vegan clothing and uses fair labor practices? Do you just run out to the nearest shopping center to have a look in a lot of different stores? Maybe you swing by Target and hope to find what you need there? How often do you look into the practices of the companies you buy from? How often do you look at the label to see what material an item of clothing is made from? What do you do with the clothes you no longer want? What laundry detergent do you use? Do you use a dryer or hang your clothes on a line?
