read part 1 for better understanding...... Emma’s breath caught as the shadow moved closer. It was tall and thin, swaying like it wasn’t quite solid. The tapping had stopped, but the silence felt heavy. Like the room was holding its breath. She stepped back, her heart pounding so hard she could feel it in her chest.

It was just an ordinary Tuesday in the late 1800s, one of those days that didn’t seem special at all. The year was 1887, and the small town of Willow Creek, nestled in the Midwest, was quiet and peaceful. The air was cool, with the smell of woodsmoke from chimneys and the earthy scent of fallen leaves. The streets were mostly empty, except for the occasional sound of horse hooves and creaking wagon wheels.

It started with the noise. Emma had just moved into her new apartment on the third floor of an old building. The apartment was small but nice, with big windows that let in lots of light during the day. At night, though, the building felt different. The stairs creaked, the pipes made strange sounds, and sometimes she heard a loud thud from the apartment above. But the worst sound came from the apartment across the courtyard.
