Movie Review: The Original 'I Spit on Your Grave' Is Still Terrible
In the early 2000s, it became briefly hip amongst film cultists to defend Meir Zarchi's 1978 exploitation flick, I Spit on Your Grave. Cult film critic, Joe Bob Briggs, is on the record calling the film a "masterpiece of cinema.” So many stepped forward to defend the film, that it earned a special edition dvd release from Elite Entertainment to celebrate the film’s 25 year anniversary back in 2003. The dvd came complete with THX sound, tv spots, critic reviews, and two commentary tracks—one by the film’s director Meir Zarchi and the other by the aforementioned Joe Bob Briggs.

Movie Review 'Devil's Path' Is a Throwback Drive in Thriller
Devil’s Path is the kind of old school, grind house, chase in the woods thriller Hollywood doesn’t know how to make anymore. A throwback to the bloody, drive in thrillers of the 1970s, Devil’s Path is a visceral and often disturbing thriller with exceptional characters and a killer pace. Actor turned first time director Matthew Montgomery directs Devil’s Path and delivers a stunner of a debut feature.

Movie Review 'The Drone'
The Drone is one of the silliest nonsense horror movies of recent memory. The film ranks next to movies like Zombeavers or the Korean horror movie, The Wig, which features killer hair extensions, as a movie with a dopey beyond dopey premise. The Drone features exactly what the title promises, a drone. Only this particular drone happens to have the spirit of a dead serial killer inside of it.

Dry Blood stars Clint Carney as Brian Barnes, a drug addict desperately hoping to get clean. After waking up in his car in some lonely Los Angeles alley, with no idea what he did in the preceding days, Brian decides he wants to quit. So, Brian calls a friend to be his sponsor and join him as he dries out a cabin he owns on a remote, California mountainside.

Child's Play: Chucky at 30
How did our culture come to allow Chucky from Child’s Play become a thing? Thirty years after the film debuted Chucky remains in the darkest corners of our popular culture appealing to those with a bizarre, macabre sense of humor and a deep tolerance for stupid. Personally, I’ve never had any interest in this silly horror doll nonsense. I’ve never understood the appeal.

Movie Review: 'The Fog' - 4K Restoration
John Carpenter had a tough act to follow when he set out to followup his 1978 slasher flick Halloween. I may not be a fan of Halloween, but even I can recognize the impact the film had, becoming a big grossing genre flick and an influential piece of pop genre work. Carpenter became a cult hero overnight, and following that kind of success the first time out was a challenge.

Movie Review: 'Hereditary'
Hereditary is a shocking and deeply unsettling horror thriller. Writer-director Ari Ascher’s remarkable attention to detail in production design, cinematography, and even character blocking, where a character is positioned in the frame, contributes to the brilliance of Hereditary. That the film also features a career-best performance from Toni Collette only underlines the genius at play in Hereditary.

Movie Review: 'Night of the Virgin'
Night of the Virgin turned my stomach. That sounds like the start of a negative review but, far from it. I actually loved Night of the Virgin. This Spanish import from director Roberto San Sebastian is hysterically funny and deeply disturbing all at once. The film is teeming with horrific invention and deep themes about women and sexuality and I loved every minute of it, even as I was queasy most of the way.

Movie Review: 'Truth or Dare'
Truth or Dare, or Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare, if we are skirting copyright issues, is a silly, silly movie filled with dopey characters on a pointless quest for their miserable lives. As directed by Jeff Wadlow, the director behind the abysmal, franchise-killing Kick Ass 2, Truth or Dare takes a child’s game and renders it even more insipid and hateful than it already is.

Review: 'Unsane'
While many are focused on Steven Soderbergh’s mode of filming Unsane, they might miss just how exceptional the film truly is. The fact that Soderbergh, the auteur behind Traffic, Erin Brockovich, and the mind behind mainstream blockbusters like the Oceans franchise, made Unsane on several different iPhones is certainly notable, but the important thing to know is that he has made one incredibly chilling horror thriller.
