A Moose in Tas
When your family decides to move half-way around the world, at fifteen, you simply do not understand the bigger implications. I was in love with the fact we were moving to Australia; I never anticipated the level of culture shock I did. Prior to this move, my family had moved once before, a mere eighteen months earlier from a small fishing town to an even smaller mill town. I was bursting out of the small-town life, and it was exciting.

My Purple Patch of Creative Happiness
Ironically, I do not view myself as a crafty or creative crafty person. Never have. As I thought about my life, I have indeed created many crafty items and it perplexes why I still sit here today, at 44 years old, and wonder why I do not consider myself crafty.

My One Voice Matters for Mother Earth
I grew up along the pristine shorelines of Vancouver Island. My parents had built our home in the late 70s and we had spectacular views of the ocean. I fell in love as orcas or blue whales would swim in the waters off our coast, and we would sit there watching either with just our eyes or through binoculars. As I watched them from a young age, I had a love for the ocean and developed a deep-rooted respect for it that prevails to this day. We were also surrounded by some amazing lakes, and our summer day trips to the lake would see me swimming the entire time (except for the mandatory lunch and snack breaks). I loved to swim and the feeling of propelling myself through the water imagining I was an orca.

My Teen Version ('90s)
When the 90s started, I was 13 and living in a small fishing town on Vancouver Island, Canada. I was in grade eight, my first year of high school, and I was secretly incredibly happy to be back in the same school with my brother, who was in grade 11. He was a senior, he was popular, and he was even a bit famous for his athletic achievements.

Trifecta of Thrift Treasures
I was not really exposed to thrift stores until I was in university and we were looking for costume ideas for Halloween. The first time I walked into the Value Village downtown with my friends, I paused with the sheer size of it. Inside, there was a buzz. They instantly fell into the flow and groove of the store. Crowded and many people on the same mission in October, knowing this was the treasure trove of finds.

My Beethoven Zen
Music has always been a way for me to express myself. From a young age, I had each of my parents’ taste in music and then my older brothers’. When I was eight years old, I started piano and theory lessons, followed by the trumpet at age 11. I developed my piano playing under the Royal Conservatory of Music and my focus was classical. I enjoyed radio music and what others listened to, but classical music has always allowed my emotions to flow and for me to find calm and balance.

My Dad, Benjamin
My Dad, Benjamin It was a sunny and crisp Saturday morning nearing my moving home day. I was not looking forward to having to move and the task ahead of me this weekend. My renovations were almost done and I was determined, or more determined than when I had to empty my house, to not move items in that I no longer need to carry with me.
