I've Known He Was Racist Since I Knew What Racism Was
I was twenty. At a hotel, on vacation, in a mostly White area. We walked across the courtyard of the hotel and passed a young Black woman who had just sat down in one of the chairs, looking at her phone. A total stranger; presumably another guest on vacation.

When I was five, my grandfather tried to convince me that men were superior to women. I don’t remember this, being so young at the time, but my mother has since recounted the story to me. I was standing there, looking up at my beloved grandpa with wide eyes, nodding along when she walked in and heard what he was saying.

It was my sixteenth birthday. Like many other teens, I wasn’t always the greatest person to be around – too much angst and drama, and a serious lack of consideration and patience. On that day I was in the living room when my dad came home. He told me that his coworker had found me a birthday present, and that the box was in his car.

I Lost Myself in His Version of Love
For a while, he was everything. His charm was perfect, his confidence high, his affection overwhelming – in a good way. He waltzed into my life and gave me lots of attention from the start. It was nice to feel wanted and I immediately got swept up in it, having just moved to the area and started a new job. He had a similar job working for the same company, so I saw him fairly often. Cliché as it sounds, deep down I had a gut feeling that he wasn’t right for me, but I chose to ignore it because I didn’t want to be alone.
