Sam is a student from Canada who is fond of literature and writing, but also concerned deeply about the ecological issues that plague our planet. She hopes to cause awareness through empathy and spread the word of love for our home, Earth.

What's All the Buzz About?
A world without the buzz of bees would really sting. The humble bumblebee- the same ones we swat and scream at when they fly our way, play a crucial role in each of our daily lives! We actually have a bee to thank for every 1 in 3 bites of food that we eat every single day. Bees work tirelessly, sometimes up to 12 hours a day foraging nectar and transporting pollen between plants to produce essential foods in our diet like fruits, vegetables, nuts, chocolate and even coffee! Bee populations have been drastically declining more and more each year since the 1980s. If we lose our precious pollinators to extinction, we lose up to 90% of the world’s nutrition. It’s time for us humans to beehive!

Just for Fins
Sharks have gained a rather bad reputation over the years, perhaps it’s because of the way they are portrayed in movies like Jaws or maybe because their multiple rows of teeth may not make them look like the cuddliest of creatures. In as early as the year 1758, they were labelled as “man-eaters” and since then have been deceived by the media as malicious predators when in reality, they are a very curious and intelligent species that aren’t worth all the worry you have before you dip your toes into the ocean. Demonizing sharks with human motives is what is driving them closer to extinction. The attacks they’ve made on humans is nothing compared to the damage we have caused to their population. We are a far greater threat to them.

Consent→ When someone agrees, gives permission, or says "yes" to sexual activity with another person. Consent is ALWAYS freely given, never forced. Every person involved in a sexual situation must feel that they are able to say "yes," "no" or be able to stop the sexual activity at any point in time.

Digital Love
The average human lives an estimate of 25,915 days and spends a mere 10 percent of their time living to find someone to love. I'm convinced that nobody knows what love really is. How do we explain to our children that it isn't what we see in movies anymore? It isn't the proximity to meeting through our friends or heading to the local cafe. How do we explain that love is just swiping left and right on images of men/women that we may be attracted to? Millennials fall in love over messages, leaving nothing left to say when they meet for the first time face-to-face. Digital dating has become infiltrated with casual hookups or nothing at all. These days, you head to a club and instead of people socializing, you see tables of singles sitting on their cellphones swiping faces trying to decipher who they would have sex with later. Love has become a competition, prowling on the best-looking people.

It's Okay to Not Know What You're Meant to Do in Life
We are consistently asked at a very young age, "what do you want to be when you grow up? A firefighter? A doctor? A veterinarian?" as if our eight-year-old selves will depict our future career path. Realistically, only six percent of the human population end up with the career they wanted as a kid. Perhaps this is because as a child, there are only handful occupations they know about—ones you would find in a storybook or maybe the career you're working towards now didn't quite exist yet. On the other hand, more than twenty-five percent of students are struggling to even obtain their high school diploma. I've had friends who found it unnecessary to finish high school and decide to raise a family instead, I've had friends who left their college programs to work a minimum wage job, I've had friends graduate university and not even make use of their degree and others who have graduated and immediately started pursuing a position in the career they earned. Each of these situations are all equally okay. Maybe we didn't end up where we hoped we would be or maybe we aren't the people we wanted to become, but that is alright.

Low Self-Esteem
I used to question myself every single day "Who Am I?" Who is the girl behind the tired, dark brown eyes and shy smile? I could piece together fragments of myself but they never fit together. It's almost like I was trapped inside of my body, waiting to be set free. Parts of myself would escape from my caged sad soul and flash glimpses inside of my mind of a happier life with endless possibilities. Standing in the mirror, I barely recognized my eyes that were full of life and the smile that stretched from ear to ear, when did I ever stop loving her? My hands slowly moved towards my reflection, but as soon as my fingertips made contact, I disappeared. Just like that, she was gone.

A Brighter Mind
Coffee becomes cool, cigarettes burn out, the music stops playing, books come to an end, metals rust, conversations run dry, and sunlight dies; the same way that his affection made you feel loved, the way his words made you feel heard, his eyes made you feel existent...everything comes to an end. Why is it that when I think of him, I self-destruct and love myself a little less? With the slightest touch from his hand, my heart would cringe, but as a ghost from my past, he obliterates me, and the only way to deal with it is through alcohol that tastes like hell and drugs that mess with my mind. Every bit of hope was lost. I disregarded every moral that I believed in and stripped myself of any love that I've felt.

How Could You Not Want to Fall in Love Again?
It's no longer waking up to cute good morning texts. It's remembering you no longer have a person to plan things you dreamed of doing with. It's going places you once visited with the "love of your life" and trying not to let the memories overwhelm you. It's taking showers in the middle of the day because you can't dare to let your family hear you sobbing anymore. It's replaying everything in your head with the hopes of finding out where you went wrong. It's becoming a prisoner to your own sadness if you don't find a new way to occupy yourself. It's knowing sooner or later, they will find someone else and that someone will not be you. It's every tear I shed, every knot I felt in my throat, and every ache in my stomach- That's what heartbreak feels like. So I ask myself, why is everyone so obsessed with the idea of being in love?

Acceptance
He completely destroyed me with six simple words. “I think we should break up.” I remember living my first day without you. You left me and took my appetite along with every bit of motivation I had towards my future with you. You learned all of my secrets, flaws, scars, and you left. With no hesitation, you were gone; you decided you didn't want to fight for me anymore, you gave up so easily. I didn’t think I would be able to continue with this never-ending ache I felt in my heart every time I exhaled. My stomach would churn every time I thought of you. My thoughts ran so wild, there was no way I could sleep at night. My eyes could tell you the saddest stories without me having to speak a word. I didn’t feel as if I was living life anymore, I was just surviving day by day. I was broken, damaged and fading.

To His next Girl, I know you probably hate me and we haven't even met, I get it, it's normal. I'm sure I will be a little resentful when I first find out about you too. I don't want you to be intimidated by our pictures together as they are only memories of the past. You will never have to worry about me texting, calling or being around, but there are a few things I want you to know since you are his person now.

Ocean Pollution
Tons of plastic and other debris that are carelessly dumped into our oceans are swirling in currents, breaking into smaller components and never going away. The world's oceans are covered in trash that either degrades and sinks to the bottom or drifts onto our shores. Marine debris has a massive impact on not only wildlife, but humans as well. Sea turtles, seals, sea lions, seagulls, whales, and dolphins are only five of the marine animals dying from our plastic trash. These creatures depend on us—why are we being so shellfish?

Endangered: Coral Reefs
Imagine scuba-diving in the shallow waters of the ocean and seeing the beautiful variation of colors on every single unique reef fish, giant clam, lobster, seahorse, and sea turtle swimming above the vibrant corals. Coral reefs are home to all of those amazing creatures and many more. They depend on the reefs for survival—without them, those species wouldn't exist.
