The right fit at the right time
Becoming a Peace Corps Volunteer is an opportunity I never could have imagined at this point in my professional and personal life, but the timing is actually just right. My children are adults. I am well-established in my career, and I have a breadth of knowledge, experience, and a unique skillset that I did not have to offer when I first considered the Peace Corps in my 20s. Serving in the Peace Corps is a calling that has been lingering on my bucket list since I turned 25. Now, several decades later, I am fulfilling that dream as a Peace Corps Response Volunteer on a one-year assignment in the Andean region of Colombia.

Very special simple gifts: my people in Georgia
Serving in the Peace Corps was among my lifelong goals and dreams. But multiple chapters of life happened when I became an adult – college, a year of (literally) traveling around the world, graduate school, marriage, family, career, community life, more graduate school, and quasi-retirement. I had to be patient, given that the opportunity didn’t arrive until 2017, when I was more than 60 years young and my husband of 33 years gave me an extraordinary gift.

United in Preventing Violence Against Women and Girls
When women and girls participate in all aspects of life without the fear of violence, we unlock their ability to become catalysts for progress. Around the world, local communities work hand-in-hand with Peace Corps Volunteers to prevent gender-based violence. We do that by addressing the root causes of violence, empowering community members to tackle power imbalances and enhance their skills for sustainable behavior change.

4 Peace Corps locations that are taking distance learning to the next level
Over the years, technology and infrastructure has made distance learning possible. All you need is a computer or mobile device and an internet connection. The COVID-19 pandemic made distance learning necessary for the Peace Corps and students around the world. Face-to-face classes were too dangerous, and it was impossible to know when schools would reopen safely. Educators around the world got to work on solutions to continue education and minimize the impact of the pandemic on students’ learning.
