The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is home to over a million seeds. They rest in a steely, permafrost fortress nestled in the Norwegian mountains, surrounded by guards, polar bears, and the Arctic Sea to the North. A silent monolith, a castle that houses the seeds which are the blueprint for the plant biodiversity of our planet.

Why do we kill what is holy? I found myself possessed by this thought as I stood in front of the corral at midnight. I was not supposed to be here, the Festival of San Fermin was not for over another week. The bulls needed their rest, before they marched through the cobbled and ancient streets of Pamplona. Through throngs of thrilled, terrified, adrenaline-drunk men of all ages. A tribute to both tradition and mortality.

Marigold Tea
Mushroom circles. Soft, ivory, silky tops arranged in a round that was a little too perfect to be coincidental. We passed through this point in the forest together many times, pointing to these circles and wondering what Fae might cross into our world through here.

Would you accept a chocolate cake from a Fae? Accepting almost anything from a being as beautiful as summer, but as fickle and powerful as a hurricane, sounds like a risk. But I wanted to know a secret, a secret that only the Keeper of the Willows could give me. The best adventures come with the strangest dangers, and in this instance my danger was a sit-down dinner with a Fae.

The Butterfly Cake
92% cacao. This ganache was as dark as night, thick, and steaming out of my double-boiler. I could smell the deep, bitter chocolate, as startling as a fresh cup of coffee at 4 AM. I loved the scent, the sensation of awakening to a beautiful surprise, like a glowing sunrise or my mother making me breakfast.

The Builder's Heart
The coffin was just slightly longer than my body, and wide enough for me to sleep in one position. The velvet cushions, wooden carvings, and gold accents were made for a prince or a lord, not a general on the run. Yet escaping a dangerous, evil regime meant using whatever vehicles were on hand, and for me they were a coffin and the ocean.
