Fear: Friend or Foe?
Scarlet stood behind the extravagant curtains that led to the stage, surrounded by the other girls clothed in bejeweled ball gowns. Mirrors were posted on every sandstone-tainted wall, where you could find everyone fixing their hair and adjusting the straps on their dresses. One group was holding hands, trying to slow the rush in their hearts.

A searing light
I never truly knew how important it was to breathe. But trapped in the small space of the wooden chest, my plump body pushed to the margins, it was all I wanted. Air was everything. The inside of the chest was etched with pencil marks, lines, symbols. No words. I closed my eyes briefly, praying and wishing I would somehow escape this dire situation. As time went on, the space seemed to shrink, slowly dissipating from a large crate to a ring box. I could even see the faint hints of ocean water starting to sink through the crevasses of the wood. I felt like a Jack-in-a-box, my body as the dolls fabric, bended and confined to eventually be winded up and removed to breathe and dance around in excitement. But the difference was that I was never getting out of here, and I would never be happy again.

Invisible
She woke up with tangled hair and a grubby face, disoriented until fragments of light reached out to her from the satin curtains near her bedside table, waking her up. Ringing the golden bell plastered to the wall, her maids rushed in with a luxurious breakfast that she ate on a silver tray, body still under the warm covers. Her appetite had faltered lately, but today she managed to eat every last drop of syrup that oozed off the buttered pancakes like a golden waterfall. She rationed the single glass of cold water like it was the holy grail, savouring each refreshing lick.
