Dark Energy: The Mortal Fracture
CHAPTER FOURTEEN: WASI’S PREDATOR TRAINING 1988 Hamilton, Montana – Old Mine The darkness swallowed a nineteen-year-old Wasi in his entirety as he was lowered into the mine. His body dangled in the darkness activating and heightening his senses of touch, smell, and taste. These senses each hungered for knowledge of the dark environment they entered, and as the rope lowered him into the chasm, they were bathed in a flash flood of stimuli.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN: THE MISSION Research Center – 2011 Martin watched as Sade and Wasi exited the air control tower and approached his position. His eyes locked onto Sade and he studied her every move trying to dissect out any clues to her reaction to his presence. Everyone that had been involved in Martin’s plan had known that at some point the time would come when all old debts would come due, and today was that day. Martin, on the other hand, knew that he would be met with opposition, resistance and even outright hostility, especially from Sade. To his surprise, however, she walked towards him in an almost excited cantor. In fact, her body movements indicated that she was glad to see him. Well, maybe not glad, he thought. “Accepting” perhaps was a better word for it.

CHAPTER TWELVE: THE TAKEOVER Nanoq’s Residence – Barrow, Alaska - 2011 The home was dark and still. Fish and Game agent Carl Nanoq, the assumed nemesis of Sade, approached his front door exhausted from a long day of navigating the frozen northern territory. He had been on duty since early the day before and he anticipated a joyful reunion with his warm bed. As he took each step towards his door, he became more suspicious because his dogs were not barking to herald him home. This unusual silence brought Nanoq to stillness with one last crunch of snow beneath the heavy soles of his boots. He held his breath waiting to pick up a sound that would explain the mystery that resided in his home, or that would somehow justify the silence, but no sounds fell on his ears.

CHAPTER ELEVEN: MARTIN’S STORY Antarctica – 2004 The doors to the Antarctica Research Center flew open as Martin and Sade were helped into the safety of the building. The doors closed heavily behind them disconnecting them from the events that had left both shaken and damaged. Martin seemed to be the most impacted, as he took the brunt of the force released by the explosion. He had cuts and scrapes on his face that oozed with blood, fluid, and gore.

CHAPTER TEN: DRAGON LINES Alaska – Late Winter 2011 The flight back to the research camp was bittersweet. On the one hand, it was exciting that their research had produced results that could be tested in the field, but on the other hand, the level of danger that the team would now be working under was severe. Wasi felt the tension of the impending escalation of danger deep within his being. He watched Sade who seemed unaware of how much things were about to change. She seemed happy and excited, two emotions he rarely witnessed in her. This change in her personality was attractive and enticing, and he very much envied the naivety that she displayed in her enthusiasm.

CHAPTER NINE: UNWANTED ATTENTION Anchorage, Alaska - 2011 The afternoon light faded to twilight as Wasi and Sade made their way through Anchorage in separate vehicles. Wasi was ahead of Sade in his rented truck. He constantly glanced up at the rearview mirror to track her progress. He was nervous about what just happened as he was unsure of its legitimacy. On the other hand, if Sade was right and electricity was the solution, then it meant that change was rapidly approaching him. He hated this part of an assignment as it was intense, full of uncertainties, bloody, and destructive. These realities ran through his mind, ricocheting off the sound of his breaks squealing as he pulled to a stop at a red light.

CHAPTER EIGHT: THE EXPERIMENT Experiment Log - Day 1 The incubation of the antibodies began at 0600 this morning. This process exposed the purified antibodies to a warm and humid environment that was set at 4 degrees C for a period of 12 hours. While incubating the antibodies, live stellate cells were extracted from my own liver using a standard biopsy needle. These cells were colonized and prepared for further analysis and experimentation. Dr. Wasi also prepared the Vitamin A serum which included a compound of retinol and deoxycholic acid. The solution ratio of retinol to deoxycholic acid enzyme solution was set at 450 units per 100ml of retinol, which has been the standard for Vitamin A absorption experiments in the past.

CHAPTER SEVEN: KIM’S CONDITION Sade’s Cabin - 2010 The morning came suddenly, startling Sade and Wasi with the harsh sounds of the alarm clock. They were still in the living room on the couch where their late night conversation revealed a connection that they both had to Martin’s agenda and control. The truth revealed was not complete, but it at least identified the threats that they faced. This made it easier to trust one another, and easier to move forward with what had to be done before the winter darkness gave way to the birth of the near non-stop exposure to light promised by the polar spring and summer months.

CHAPTER FIVE: WASI’S STORY What is evil? This is a question that often passed through Wasi’s mind as he executed his assigned victims. He entered the military a couple of years after graduating high school as a way to distance himself from the pain of the failures of his youth. He had quickly made a name for himself as a modern-day warrior. He was known simply as the Chameleon, as he could morph into any persona, be it soldier or terrorist, seamlessly and effortlessly. This skill allowed him to engage in battles both as a patriot and an enemy combatant. While strategically beneficial, this duality was morally confusing as Wasi had to abandon his preexisting moral judgment and biases and assume an entirely new set in order to be successful in his missions.

CHAPTER THREE: ADVANCEMENTS & SETBACKS Alaska – Winter 2010 The plane dipped and pitched as it fought its way through the Arctic wind and snow. Flurries of snow danced around the engines of the twin-prop plane searching for a way to rob the engines of their heat. Inside, Sade sat buried under a pile of files, notes and charts, oblivious to the violent struggle that was taking place outside. Her mind spun, trying to find a solution to their antibody source problem.
