A Second Look at a Solo Story Ain't so Bad
My initial plunge into Han Solo : A Star Wars story did not go so well. I believe this paragraph encapsulates the drudgery. Following the green screened air locomotive chase, “This Star Wars story was more like someone put a camera on a bank robbery and simply followed the characters along. Stressful and dramatic for the perpetrators but not necessarily for those who are being spoon fed the feed. I struggled to stay awake and soon walked out."

Part I : A Look Back at 2019 John Jay Football - Hen Hud and Brewster
John Jay Sinks Sailors 34-6 After two runs for minus seven yards to open the game on Friday Night at John Jay High School, Hen Hud Quarterback Braden Ellis hit Marcus Lenz on the run for a first down, and the game between the two 1-0 teams looked like it might be a good one. But the Sailor offense was not really heard from again until late in the third quarter, and any chance that visitors could keep up was pretty much decided on the Indians first play from scrimmage.

John Tortorella is Long Gone but his Press Conferences Said a Lot About the Media
Photo by Rich Mitchell The Rangers fired John Tortorella several years ago. He had refused to yield his style to the makeup of the team roster and got what he deserved. But I still miss his press conferences and not just for the entertainment value.

Somers Girls go to 4-0 with 3-2 Victory over John Jay
If time of possession counted toward the final score in soccer, Saturday afternoon’s Girls Class A meeting between Somers and John Jay would have been a blowout. But the Tuskers will still take the narrow 3-2 victory they held on for, and as long they keep the handy work with their feet going forward, the success should continue.

No Matter your Point of View, ‘Snowden’ Gets your Attention
In American movies it’s pretty much the good guys versus the bad guys – the heroes manageable flaws not withstanding. So when the drama takes into account real events, you must watch it through that prism and when you add in the controversial Oliver Stone, well...

Alien Covenant May seem Rehashed but Injects Fresh Blood into Franchise
As I was pulled along with the plot of Alien Covenant, I realized I was on very familiar ground. Once again, a lonely spaceship is traversing the universe and just feels at the tragic mercy of the vast expanse . Throw in a duplicitous android, add a swarm of marauding xenomorphs, and the day only awaits saving from a fierce heroine who will inspire a generation of young girls. Another Alien movie, I thought - ho hum. Then the ending arrives. Yes, Katherine Waterston as Daniels does her bit, but this installment’s finale sets the 2017 Ridley Scott film apart. In a word, wow…

Don Imus, David Letterman and Johnny Carson Moments that all Talk Shows Should Aspire
Photo by Rob Young https://www.flickr.com/photos/rob-young/ Don Imus After the invasion of Iraq and during the 2004 President Campaign, Don Imus showed us how real journalism works. I can’t remember the Democratic senator being interviewed but he was right up there with Joe Biden, Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy. Of course, the Senator was following suit with John Kerry’s central rationale for supplanted George W. Bush. The Iraq invasion having descending into chaos, a Kerry administration will join forces with our key allies in Europe and get the situation under control,” he droned on.

There’s Nothing Ordinary About 45 Years With Charlotte Rampling
45 Years sets us at ease as it opens to the bucolic English countryside, and the tone of Charlotte Rampling’s lilt ascend us into the golden years of a long, fruitful romance. But the shadow of a past love puts the basking at bay and turns the glacially paced Andrew Haigh plot into a cascade. Smothered and suffocated, the unraveling of the 2015 film will leave you feeling as though you were buried in an all consuming avalanche.

Part II : A Look Back at 2019 John Jay Football - vs Panas and Beacon
John Jay 49 Panas 17 Coming into Friday night’s game at Walter Panas, John Jay has enjoyed three blowouts. The offense explodes in all directions, and the defense stands down everything in their way. But football is a three dimensional game, and Head Coach Jimmy Clark geared his lesson plan as such this week. “We put emphasis on special teams,” said Clark, and the kicking game responded with three touchdowns in tallying a 49-17 rout.

Somers Rides Four Matthew Pires Touchdowns to 28-6 Victory
For the bulk of last night’s game between Somers and Sleepy Hollow, the end zone didn’t have a lot of company from the 70 players suited up at the High School. But when one breaks the plane four times, it's more about the company you keep, and Wide Receiver Matthew Pires happily obliged to be on the receiving end in Somers' 28-6 victory.

Part II : JJ Abrams' Star Trek Movies are Being Held to a Higher Science Fiction Standard
Here's my second installment on this subject. I have long agreed that Star Trek (2009) was pretty light on the serious science fiction subject manner. But I've recently had a change of heart, and here I go again gladly defending JJ Trek.

Mahopac Umpire Is Still at It After 50 Between the Lines
A basketball referee who is as youthful looking as 91 year old Bob Manning could easily go unnoticed as teams set up in the half court offense. On the other hand, when games goes up tempo his lag was hard to miss - especially from one very pertinent individual. “They would start the fast break and were all going past me before I got to half court. So I felt I was cheating the girls,” said Manning. “They gave me a party and I retired.” But Manning still does have both a whistle and well functioning right thumb, and he continues to put them to good use.
